Re: Andy Pettitte could be coming back to N.Y
Did you somehow forget that Randy Johnson and his 5.00 ERA managed to win 17 games last year?
The Yankees offense is going to basically be just as strong next year as it was last year. Like someone else said, you don't have to be great to win games in pinstripes."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Andy Pettitte could be coming back to N.Y
If Pettitte wins 10 games and makes 15 starts the Yanks don't care because they'll make the playoffs regardless with that offense. The Yanks have brought him in for one simple reason and that's the playoffs. Pettitte has always been a big game pitcher for them and that what they need right now is to have someone who can get them 2 wins in a series and what Johnson is not giving them. In fact I expect the Yanks to baby Pettitte so that he's somewhat rested and going full tilt come October.
He's cool under pressure and I can still remember that 96 World Series against the Braves where he pitched a gem of a game and the Yanks won 1-0(either game 4 or 5 after the Yanks lost the 1st 2 games at home and then won 4 straight). In that game he didn't even have his best stuff and the Braves seem to be threatening every inning but the guy would bend but not break. He's also had several big wins during the later World Series runs.Last edited by Seymour Scagnetti; 12-09-2006, 12:15 PM.Comment

Re: Andy Pettitte could be coming back to N.Y
No but 2 years ago he had a great year, and last year he had a great 2nd half, the guy can still pitch. True, it was the national league but in 2003 he was pretty good in the American League and that is not that long ago, so it's not unreasonable that he can win 15+ games with a era in the low 4's.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Andy Pettitte could be coming back to N.Y
I'm sorry, the only thing RS may care for is WS, but has to settle for defeat as regurlary as seeing the mighty Yankees in the first place in the AL east, year in and out. 1 title in over 80 years sure did change the view of the RS nation. Hilarious.Comment

You remember his one great gem. Fans only remember the greatest or the poorest outings. No one ever remembers the average performances. Pettitte wasn't always dominant in the playoffs.
It's funny to me when people still bring up the postseason as this huge difference. The sample size is ridiculously small and for guys that play enough games it always reverts to their regular season stats.
Pettitte's playoff career: 14-9, 4.08 ERA (212 IP, 228 H, 58 BB, 134 K)
Pettitte's season average: 17-9, 3.81 ERA (216 IP, 224 H, 67 BB, 159 K)
Those are terribly close, and in fact he has performed better in-season than postseason. But, fans still talk about the guy like he's been lights out in the postseason.
He's been the same pitcher (which by the way isn't a bad thing).
edit: Just because I like to prove a point. (fun and giggles)
Jeter's playoff career: .314/.384/.479, 23* HR, 66 RBI*, 116 Runs*, 478 AB
Jeter's season average .317/.388/.463, 18 HR, 83 RBI, 123 Runs, 655 AB
