Not only that, but he gets hurt every season and usually multiple times during the season.

It's actually all based on speculation. There's still spring training left to decide where players are in the lineup. Marcus may still end up leading off.

Hey, at least its safe to say he'll hit 15 home runs.

IMHO Greene is one of the worst offensive SS in baseball. The guy has terrible plate discipline- I actually thought he'd be aight after his rookie year

Part of the blame could be on Dave Magadan shoulders. Rumor had it that he really didn't work with Greene.

Most importantly though I really hope he gets his act together and learns how to not get beat on breaking pitches low and away and for him to stop letting every first pitch he sees go by. So many times pitchers just tossed a fastball down the middle and he's down 0-1.

He also needs to stay healthy.

Maybe not, now that he plays half of his games at Petco.

The rumor was, Greene refused to listen to Magadan.

So with the kid we got from Cleveland for Barfield, M. Giles, Greene, and Gonzo, are we better off than we were before?

Moving Barfield is going to be one of those moves that haunts the Pads for years, that they are famous for.

Ball carried at Petco a lot better this past year. And as the construction around the stadium continues, most feel the ball will carry even better in the near future.

He is not a lead off hitter. And yes his downfall is greatly exagerrated. Padres are getting a good hitter, a doubles hitter. And in that ball park, I think we see him bouncing back and having a nice year.

He won't produce like Barfield did, nor is he as good with the glove, nor does he run as well.

Team got worse instead of better this year.

And where are all the big signing we heard from KT that the Padres were going to make?

                        Greg Maddux.

BTW, I don't know why they traded Barfield. He was pretty good last year and was only going to get better.

Man, they were talking up the Maddux signing out here, like they signed the Greg Maddux of 13 years ago. Supposedly his presence will raise the game of Peavy and Chris Young. I'll remain skeptical.

I'm talking about Khalil Greene, not Marcus Giles.

I think the only signings are going to be Maddux and Giles. They tried with Alfonso Soriano, but never got a call back from his agent and immediately afterward Soriano signed with the Cubs, then they tried getting Iwamura to plug in at second base but got OWNED by the Devil Rays , but utimately they were setting themselves up for a trade with the Yankees for Gary Sheffield to solve their power bat and LF problem but they put too many eggs in that basket and it ended up falling apart, which is why they had not made any real noise this offseason. The best a team like this is to build through their farm and so far in the offseason they've set themselves quite nicely by chance, landing many compensation picks that would at least give them depth in what is currently what of the worst farm systems in the league, especially in the upper levels.

While Greg Maddux is better than any of our "MLB" ready starters in AAA, I don't think he's here to "mentor" Peavy, Young, or Hensley. I don't know where that talk is coming from, but it's ridiculous, he's not a pitching coach. The youngsters should learn by example IMO...

Finally, onto Barfield. I really would like to see how he progresses, but I think some people here in San Diego are overrating him a bit. Yes he hit .280 and yes he reached double figures in home runs, but he needs to work on his plate discipline a little bit. I really think he'll turn into a clutch hitter (he was in the minors) as he gains more experience, but the hole in third base is too great to ignore.

If you look at it, there are no desirable third basemen on the market and the Padres had just dealt with a flameout in Sean Burroughs and a joke of an acquisition in Vinny Castilla. While anything could happen with Kevin Kouzmanoff, I really think this guy can easily outproduce Josh Barfield. Defensively he's average, but I expect him to eventually be moved to LF when Chase Headley is ready. I was disappointed to see Barfield go and would have rather seen Khalil Greene traded instead.

However I get the funny feeling this might be Roberto Alomar part 2. Too bad the Padres didn't draft Josh's brother Jeremy Barfield.

Are you really surprised they made no moves this off-season. It's the same thing over and over again. The more things change the more they stay the same. This team has zero, and I repeat zero commitment to winning a championship. Their goal is to win just enough games to keep people in the seats. It looks like the NL West teams are all improving except us. So it's unlikely we'll have a pathetic NL West to help us out again this year.

As far as the Maddux mentoring thing, that came from several sources here, and it's sort of been his MO the last few years.

Overrating Barfield? Hardly, but you always like to put a positive spin on everything they do. The hole at 3rd base is to big to ignore? So you trade a potential all-star at what age 23, for a guy that hasn't played a lick yet? And now they've filled that hole? Now they have a question mark at 3rd, and downgraded themselves at 2nd. I've seen this song and dance before from the Padres in the form of Roberto Alomar, Fred McGriff for Melvin Nieves, Ozzie Smith for Gary Templeton, or letting Dave Winfield go without a fight. This is what the Padres have done, and it's what they have done for close to 3 decades now.

Are you tired of having a mediocre team here yet? Wouldn't it be nice to have a legit title contender in the Padres more than once a decade?
