Financial Status of Baseball

this topic is generating a lot of buzz in another thread so i thought i'd open a new one up to this topic.

wy is baseball broke?
how does it get fixed?

unbalanced spending is why its broke...no competitive balance anymore.

many say the yankees (george) are to blame. why not put ANOTHER Team in NY to eat INTO the yanks fan base/ revenue stream.

debate..debate...

Bummed that you're not on my ignore list yet?.....Don't worry, I'm sure you will be very soon.

It is obvious why baseball is broke... the rich keep on getting richer and the poor keep on losing money. There is no way that Tampa Bay can compete in a division with the Yankees when their payroll is over $100 million lower. This obviously leads to unbalanced competition.
i am not exactly sure on how to fix it, but i know that the new labor deal isn't going to help that much. We need more of a major change like a strong salary cap. This will at least help limit the amount that the yanks and others can spend. Also revenue sharing needs to go up and the owners who aren't in it to win should have to sell their teams...

Contraciton would be a better solution than moving another team to ny. I think that the saturation of talent is also a major problem. I think that baseball needs a serious fix next time the labor deal comes up and not just a band-aid like they got this year.... EVEN IF IT MEANS A STRIKE. It is tough to say it but it would have been better for the game in the long run if there had been one last year and they really fixed the problem.

This topic is huge and there is really no right answer.

I thought that this CBA would help the game but it doesn't seem to have much of an effect when George Steinbrenner is spending 164 million dollars!!! The Yanks are so above the luxury tax (or whatever they call it) that they are basically giving money to the weaker teams under the terms of the CBA. This doesn't seem to have an affect on the Yankees, which is sad. I mean it's sad that the Boss can outspend everybody else and give out a crummy 9 million or something like that to other teams.

Also what irks me are the owners that cry poor. Jerry McMorris in Denver is not a poor man, Mike Illich can spend big bucks on his Red Wings but cries poor when it comes to the Tigers, Carl Pohlad is almost a billionaire and he's saying "oh woe is me. I can't maintain ownership of the Twins.", Ted Rogers in Toronto is running the Blue Jays like a mid-market club when the city is more of a upper mid market and he's got a multimedia empire. It's despicable! (whew needed to get that off my chest)

If they bring the Dodgers back to Brooklyn, I would love it and I think I would be more of Bro Dodgers fan than the Yanks. I hope someone does buy the Dodgers b/c they are up for sale and bring them to Bro. That would really enlighten the NYC fans. At least, the former BRO Dodgers fans. Many people are to blame for the MLB current condition, but certainly the Yanks aren't carrying the burden by themselves.

Ahhh, That would be a pipedream to have the Dodgers in Brooklyn again. I know George would object mightily to that but man that's one of my dreams. I've read many books on the history of the Dodgers in Brooklyn and the spirit of the Dodgers during their long history there.

It seemed that the Dodgers were a far more classy organization then as opposed to now. It's also hard to imagine the love that Brooklynites gave that team. The Dodgers being lovingly reffered to as "dem bums" and the slogan "wait til' next year" cuz they always lost to the Yankees in the WS. Even before the Dodgers' dominance in the NL in the 40s and 50s when they were a sad sack losing team they had the aura that the Cubs have today as the lovable losers.

If the Dodgers were to move back to Brooklyn with a larger replica of Ebbetts Field they would immediately become my fave NL team.

no its not just the yanks..you're right.

i think the owners/agents/players are to blame.

in fact there is a great book out there....LORDS OF THE REALM (no shire here).

its about the financial history of baseball and what went wrong. The owners give in to these agents & pay these outragous salaries. the players think they can/shouyld make as much money as NFL players..which they should...but the problem is that the money stream is much weaker in MLB.

why:

fan interest--chicken or egg issue
TV--nfl has national contracts..which all teams share...MLB has local TV..so there is NO WAY you can charge the same Ad time in NYC as in KC
Bummed that you're not on my ignore list yet?.....Don't worry, I'm sure you will be very soon.

Guys, we can all forget about another New York team. The city has been trying to get stadiums for the Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, and I've heard a new Madison Square Garden. Theres no room for a new team.

I think we need a salary cap. I'm thinking sort of like the NBA cap. Lets teams spend money a lot, but if you make stupid decisions, your done for. But we still probably need more revenue sharing, and a minimum team salary
