Not sure on the development time. He was still pretty young, and I think had just had a cup of coffee with the team in '97 I think. They loved his defense, and you could tell he could swing it. But he did go from untradeable to on the market in a hurry. I think there were some issues with his dad and Padres management also, but don't quote me on that, my memory is fading.

I am interested to see how MLB punishes both players. I doubt Young gets off scott free either. Imo, it was a case of Lee overreacting. But who knows there could have been some things going on, that we don't know about, or that aren't picked up on, on TV.

lol.. I'm still going with the Padres needing Kevin Brown back then way more than a young Derrek Lee. They may have had problems with him, but this is like saying the Devil Rays could trade Elijah Dukes in a package for Carlos Zambrano because they were sick of their troublesome outfielder.

didn't say it was the only reason, said it was a factor, and his behavour is not above reproach as was suggested.

        Branyan just went yard.

Yeah I gotcha.. sorry I've been in a snappy mood since the fight. The '# of games Lee's stupidity has cost his team' count is at 1. Zambrano's 8th inning no hitter is turned into a 1-0 loss. Horrible.. hopefully they win tomorrow cause my dad and I will be attending.

Yup, Chris Young will be getting some time off as well.

Lee's not like that. Young had to say something to set him off. I'm really interested to see what was said. We'll see.
Yeah, I think Young said something inciteful to set him off. Lee's generally pretty laid back, and if you watch Lee as he's heading to first, there's a point where he just freezes as if he can't believe what he just heard, and then he looks angry and comes after Young. He shouldn't have done it, but I think Young enticed him into that with some trash talk.

Re: Cubs need some psychiatric help

Just saw the pitch that hit Lee again. It was up around his head and he raised his hands to protect himself.

As Lee was walking towards first, he and Young were jawing it up. It looked like Young said something to him and Lee turned and said "huh" and it looked like Young said "take your base." Young then started to say something else and Lee punched him.

Props to Giles for getting Young out of the melee. I'm sure that helped tone things down.

The umpires blew it today. They should've been between Lee and Young before Lee started towards first. Instead the homeplate ump is jawing with Bowen. Where the hell were the other three?

I've always respected Young, so I really hope he didnt say anything to Lee to set him off. I'm dissapointed at Lee for his actions, because he seems better than that. Everyone loses it from time to time, but as another poster stated, this is probably the first time Lee's cost the Cubs because of something like this.

                Tough loss today.

Seems like the Cubs are targets for bad things happening. What's with this team having such a short fuse? it's like they've acquired Uncle Lou's short temper. These Cubs are so crazy they just might actually do something this year...that is, if suspensions don't get in the way.

Heh, nice pic. Lee and Young looked like a couple of heavy weights there.

If you lose respect for Young for this, you better lose it for Lee. He was not the innocent bystander in this Cub fans seem to be portraying him as.

I have no problem with Young hitting a guy for what Soriano did yesterday, though he should've hit Soriano, but whatever. I dont like the pitch towards the head/shoulder area, but maybe it got away.

And I said i'd lose respect for Young if he said something outside the lines to Lee. If it pertained to the game, then I have no problem.

Watch the pitch. It obviously tailed up and in. Usually a sign of a pitch getting away from you. Also watch Young's reaction after he hit him.

As far as saying things outside the lines. You've got to be kidding. You have any idea what's said on a baseball diamond, football field or basketball court during the heat of the battle. All kinds of crazy stuff, I can attest to that.

Chris Young needs to watch Bull Durham and learn that you should never throw a punch with your throwing hand.

Let's call it for what it is also. Young should have shut his mouth, gotten the ball, and started worrying about the next batter. Throwing a punch with your throwing hand really is a nice way to break it, and have a 2 month vacation.

You have any idea what's said on a baseball diamond, football field or basketball court during the heat of the battle. All kinds of crazy stuff, I can attest to that.[/quote] I know what your saying. But I have always liked Young and would think he was beyond some of that. Talking smack, I understand that. Digging into personal stuff, well certain players do that and its expected of them perhaps. I just dont see Young being that kind of guy, and I hope I'm not wrong.

Either way, Lee lost his head and he and the Cubs will pay for it. I wish he would'nt have, but we'll see how he explains things.

Not trying to make an excuse for Lee, but like you said, players say all kinds of things and I've never seen Lee act this way. So, IMO, Lee was either just upset at getting hit and then Young telling him he couldnt take his time going to first, or Young said something outside the lines to throw Lee over the deep end.
