Look at the stats. Koskie is not underrated. He's really just an average player. So are Olerud, Bell, Nixon, Kotsay, and most of the other guys mentioned

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

(Olerud) If .300ba, 20hrs, 100rbi's and gold glove defense at 1st every year is just "average" than don't you think there'd be alot more players with those stats every year? I think that this just proves that these guys are underrated when people are saying they are just average, yet have no idea how "average"

    <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Now that I think about it, for a first baseman, I'd actually say that's overrated. Second basemen put up those kind of numbers these days.

And for Kotsay, it doesn't really matter that he's good at defense, especially since he's an outfielder. Lots of guys are solid defensively, but that's only one part of the game. If you're nothing special as a hitter, that still makes you average at best.

I don't know about Rafeal Furcal, he's good and hes only 22, 23, he just had a few tough years being injured and all. JD Drew is way overrated, last year before the season, Sports Ilustrated had a huge article about him, and how he was going to have a huge year, well, he didn't. JD Drew has been way overhyped, as the next great outfielder, well he has yet to live up to it. Derek Jeter is also overrated, they always talk about him like he's God or something, the best shortstop to ever play the game, blah blah blah. He can't hit at all. The Expos shortstop is very underrated, Orlando Cabrera, he's quietly put up big numbers for the last couple of years.

Im very suprized all of you "real" baseball fans have Jeter as overrated. Anyone who watches baseball and is a true fan knows that his he does many things that make him great. Although his numbers are usually a modest .300 with around 20 homers and 80-90 RBI he does many things that dont show in the box score:

            1. In the post season he is able to "flip the switch" and play like a God. Great players play great in the post season.

            2. His fielding ability although not spectacular is very, very good.

            3. He is smart and is always on in the right area of the field. He communicates, turns double plays fast, and always makes the smart play.

I really am very suprized at some of you..

The "derek jeter is god" theory is one of the biggest fallacies I have ever come across...and the fact that so many people espouse it illustrates that jeter is one of the (if not THE) most overrated players in baseball. In the regular season, Jeter has career marks of .317 batting, .389 OBP, and .463 SLG. In the playoffs, he jumps up to the "god-like" levels of .314, .381, and .469. I'll concede the fact that pitching gets better in the postseason, but it still does not make jeter a great player, when he gets compared to great players all of the time. He is not in the same class as Nomar or A-Rod, and the idea of a "trinity" of good AL shortstops is complete BS. Since comparing his stats with A-Rods would be too easy...I'll compare him to this NL shortstop's stats: regular season- .296 BA, .372 OBP, and .448 SLG jumping up to .338 BA, .397 OBP, and .465 SLG. That player is Barry Larkin...a very good, but not great player. And that's what jeter is...good but not great. Overrated.

As for defense...it is a very subjective argument and one impossible to refute. He gets the job done, but not to George's liking.

Jeter had a .977 feilding average last year, if thats good for you, then OK.
