    Re: Ankiel received HGH shipments

When I lost my leg after getting wounded in Iraq I took steroids for a year to help me fight off deadly infections.

Wow! A tear to my eye. Off topic......God bless you.

The Ankiel comeback is a nice, nice story. The press will destroy that now.

He took performance-enhacing drugs, he received 8 months of his 12-month prescription. It is a susbstance though legal under baseball's stupid rules in 2004, was banned and therefore "protected" by a grandfather clause in 2005.

Why isn't he getting a private meeting with former Sen. Mitchell? Why the double-standard?

Why is Ankiel so easy to be forgiven like Giambi when they are practically caught red-handed; when Bonds has never admitted/tested postive/proven to have taken any performance-enhancing drugs.

It doesn't matter if HGH only provides players with a mental edge; it's deemed illegal by baseball and should be treated like it's the plague. Baseball should just hand-out permanent bans for anyone caught or related to any illegal performance-enhancing drugs. Bring the Hammer like Roger Godell.

Ankiel had a legal prescription for HGH though so I'm not sure how you could punish him anyways.

Cool. I was just impressed to see someone who actually seemed to know what he was talking about.

No...I don't believe in handing out punishments for actions before they were deemed illegal by MLB's stupid rules; they are protected by the Grandfather Clause.

I was saying that any offender now should have the Hammer dropped on them.

              Re: Ankiel received HGH shipments

When I heard this story last night I thought "man this is much ado about nothing". Look Ankiel had HGH before it was illegal in MLB so you can't really fault him for following the lead of guys like Bonds and McGwire. The only thing that can be a bit fishy is that he got his HGH from an illegal subscription source so who knows if he's getting it from anybody else these days.

If he can prove he's clean and isn't on HGH NOW then there's no story. That's my opinion.

                Re: Ankiel received HGH shipments

MLB created this mess. It's their responsibility to look out for the best interests of the sport, not Ankiel, McGwire, Bonds, or anyone else. They chose to look the other way while steroid use became widespread. The fact that steroids were banned in 1992 and weren't tested for until 2005 is a joke. The fact that HGH is banned but still not tested for is a joke.

Kinda ironic but on deadspin, before the HGH story came out, they posted a blog entry about how they haven't been talking a lot about Rick because they didn't want to jinx him. Less than 10 hours later, this story comes out.

Yep, I really don't care, because I have always like the HR. And watching Mark, Sammy and Bonds crush them was amazing. I heard that you really can't test for HGH, because it go out of your system pretty fast? Don't know if that is true.

I think blood testing is the only way to test for HGH currently, and MLB doesn't do blood tests as far as I know.

9 hrs in 72 or so at bats, i was kind of guessing as much w/o even reading this
lol he has always had power bro..

as far as I know.. Rick was coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2004.. and that would be the reason for him taking this.. is to help him recover quicker...

this would not help him increase his overall power or strength to hit homers... this is not steriods.. if he wanted to bulk up to hit homers he would of used steriods...

I say.. if he really did take this.. he should come right out and say it now.. not owning up to it now and it coming out later will make him look like a fool and make Big Mac look like a saint..

by the way.. Rick has the same build since first came up with the Cards from what I have seen. he is not what I call big...

I’ll briefly review some of the history for you:

In his final high school at-bat, Ankiel hit a 450-foot homer.

He once bashed three in one high school game.

A few weeks after graduating from Port St. Lucie High School in 1997, Ankiel played for the USA Baseball Junior National Team. He pitched and went 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA.

And when he didn’t pitch, he played left field and batted .387 with two homers, four doubles and 16 RBIs.

In one game, Ankiel hit a three-run homer into the upper deck of SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).

That’s right: an upper-deck shot in the major-league ballpark home of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ankiel was just about to turn 18 years old at the time.

Ankiel (as a pitcher) hit well in the minors. And as a rookie pitcher with the Cardinals in 1999, Ankiel hit a long drive off Atlanta’s Kevin Milwood into the upper deck at Busch Stadium II. It barely landed foul.

My point is, Ankiel always had the ability to launch homers. What we’ve seen in the last month is nothing new. This is a rare athlete.

That was abundantly true long before Ankiel heard of HGH or knew what it meant.

I agree with most of that article.. but I quoted the power part some here know nothing about Rick always having power... regardless if he did take HGH or not.. HGH has nothing to do with his power imo.

if Rick did take it.. he obviously took it for injuries to his pitching arm.

this doesn't taint his great comeback in my eyes...

Yes, even if they did have blood tests to test for HGH, they would have to test right away in order for them to detect it. So really it's pointless to test for HGH since it would be so hard to find in any athlete even if they did take it.
