Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
If Jake Peavy can give up 10 hits and 6 runs there, with the way he's pitched this year, one getting away from Hoffman isn't that surprising.
Rivera is imo, the greatest closer ever. But to say he's never blown a game like that in a big game isn't really fair. He's never pitched a big game in Coors, where things are not the same as they are everywhere else. Hell with those gaps a flare or dying quail can turn in to a double or triple.Comment

Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
Brian Giles
Mike Cameron
Adrian Gonzalez
Khalil Greene
Kevin Kouzmanoff
Josh Bard
Everyone else???
The only players capable of hitting close to .300 are Giles, Gonzalez, and Bard. We'll see with Kouzmanoff, but when Cameron and Greene, .250 hitters with power but strike out a lot, are in the middle of the lineup, you are going to get on base, but not drive in a lot of runs.
Greene would be perfect as the #6 hitter and Cameron would be more tolerable lower in the order. The only hitters I feel comfortable with runners on were Bard, Kouzmanoff (after June), and Gonzalez...
Like the past several seasons, we need someone to hit either #3 or #4 (we did well with Bradley there when he wasn't injured), then have Gonzalez and Kouzmanoff hit in either the 3 spot or the 5 spot.
We also need a #2 hitter that can at least hit .300... or even better pull off a Loretta-like 2004 season.
But I don't see it happening because the Padres are too cheap to pay for quality.Comment

Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
Padres window has closed. Too many older players past their prime, and the Rockies, Dodgers and DBacks all have a significantly deeper and more talented group of young players.
Welcome to another decade of the cellar SD fans.Comment

It's a good thing San Diego is heaven on earth or these losing seasons combined with choking when teams are good would kill anyone in the northeast.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
IMO we're in better shape than the Dodgers... but the cellar will belong to the Giants... their farm system is worst than ours. They have potential in pitching, but their offense right is worse and will have to rely on patchwork again this year.Comment

Have to disagree. With our pitching, (if it stays intact) we will continue to be a force in the west. Now if only the owner would spend some of that cash on a bat or two........Comment

Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
To be objective, with their track history, Peavy is as good as gone after 2009 (His option year I think), Young needs to get his **** together, Maddux is old, we have no young starters ready and the market is full of mediocre pitching. Maybe we trade Headley for a young starting pitcher to a team that needs a third base prospect or for a bat in a package deal.
If the Rockies improve that pitching, they easily win 90 games next year. Arizona will be scary too. The Dodgers... not so much. Neither will the Giants.Comment

Re: One Game Playoff: Padres at Rockies
No one saw anything conclusively. The ground view has poor depth perception so its hard to know where his foot was when it gave way...because it did give way. You cant see if he touched it nor can you see that he didnt.Comment
