well considering they trade away all their big-name talent every year and come into every season with a bunch of no-names, and considering they generally wait until like mid-August to make their run... yes I am surprised

The Yankees have struggled as well.
you're not surprised Tulowitzki's batting .152? Or that the pitching staff has basically tanked? not even a little

        Nice.

Last year wasn't exactly "good ball" in Oakland though. Then again, what do I know, I'm just a stupid fan.

A consistently Top 10 payroll says otherwise. Once upper management (Armstrong, Lincoln) and Bavasi are removed this team has a bright future. Here's hoping ownership follows through on their threat to remove these clowns.

          Most surprising: Detroit.

I'm surprised they suck as hard as they do. Bunch of mercenary thugs collecting paychecks not interested in winning.

              Anyway my surprises:

              1. Rays- their pen has been fantastic and is the biggest difference from last year. Shields and Kazmir make a nice duo at the top of the rotation and it will look even better with Niemann and Price soon. Nasty
Actually their defense has improved more than their bullpen. They were one of the worst defensive teams in the history of the game last year which cost them a ton of runs. So far this year, their defense has been one of the top in the league thanks to all the changes they made.

                  5. Rockies... last year's NL champs are 7 games below .500?
Marlins...I must agree. Two primary bats (Hanley and Uggla). No staff, a makeshift closer, and who is their manager???

All that and they are currently in 1st by 3 games in the NL East...WTF?

                        The Cardinals

If they make the playoffs this season, I fully expect Tony Larussa's head to get so big that it will explode.

Don't worry, once it warms up the pitchers will turn to crap under the sweltering sun of Arlington. They're winning right now to save Ron Washington's job.

                                Marlins for me.

I'm honestly not that surprised by the Rays. I'm a little surprised by their pitching (bullpen and starters). They have a lot of talent, but I didn't think the pitchers were going to be this good so soon. They could always hit themselves into a lead. However, holding onto that lead was a different story.
