I'm honestly not that surprised by the Rays. I'm a little surprised by their pitching (bullpen and starters). They have a lot of talent, but I didn't think the pitchers were going to be this good so soon. They could always hit themselves into a lead. However, holding onto that lead was a different story.
Steve Phillips on Mike & Mike this morning brought up an interesting fact; with this season as is, this year will see 1000 less homeruns than 2006 (believe it was that year) so teams not normally a slugger-style team can win with their running and squeezes/sacrifices.

Forgot to include Baltimore; 20-19 is pretty good this far in unlike my Rockies *sigh

That is pretty interesting. There are a few hitters that are hitting them that I'm surprised about (McLouth, Quentin and a few other guys that are good hitters, but not huge power guys). And then you have the guys that should be hitting for power and are not. Interesting season so far.

Yeah, we're not doing too bad. We can't hit, but our pitchers are performing better than expected. A lot of the younger players are showing promise and that's all that really matters this year.

I'm shocked that the Rockies are playing so poorly. Francis has got to be doing his best Zito impression.

Francis has been either horrible with location and throwing a game away or he'll do his part and the bullpen cant hold it together..Pitchers arent lasting past the 5th doesnt help give the bullpen much of a rest. This year may just be a year to shake off all those expectations

Which was highly shortsighted on his part because he failed to account for the effect of early season weather on offense. The homerun rate so far this season is almost identical to last season's through the first 6 weeks, and there were only 400 less homeruns hit last year than in 2006.

Another example of Phillips (or any B!SPN "analyst") being an ignorant blow hard pushing some ridiculous opinion.

The Marlins to me are the most surpising team followed by the Rays. For all the talent the marlins lost to be in the position they are in right now is very surprising. The Rays do have a lot of young talent but I'd be hard pressed to think that many people would have seen them get this good in such a short amount of time, especially since they have been cellar dwellers for years. Most dissapointing teams for me at this point in the season has to be Detroit, anytime you have a team that has a large payroll that is sub it's an easy choice, this includes my Mets who with all that talent are just scraping by as well.
