Agreed! The M's basically traded away at best a #5 starter, most likely a long reliever, for Cedeno and Olson.

Unless our Stay-Puff Marshmellow Shortstop does the opposite of Jessica Simpson over the offseason, then Cedeno should be starting by the All-Star break.

The guy was amazing defensively as a rookie and showed potential offensively. Now he's one of the worst fielding SS in baseball and still a hack at the plate. Although, one positive is that he tied his career high in BB's last year with 17!

Did the Cubs hire Bill Bavasi as an Assistant GM?!

Mariners made out like bandits in this deal. Essentially we get Franklin Guiterrez, Ronny Cedeno, Garrett Olsen, Endy Chavez, and 3 minor leaguers for J.J. Putz, Sean Green, and Jeremy Reed.

          I love Jeff Zduriencik.

If you include Pie for Olson, you have traded Cedeno and Pie for Heilman. Head scratcher for sure. The Cubs were out of options for Pie and Cedeno, but Seattle will sleep well tonight.

You've also got to include Luis Valbuena since he went to Cleveland in the deal. He was basically replaced by Cedeno though (which could become an upgrade if Cedeno's bat ever comes around).

Adding to that Heilman has two arbitration years left (no options remaining) while Olson is under team control for 5 years and has an option left. I don't understand it. If I didn't know he was working for the Reds, I'd think RC is right and Bavasi is working for the cubs.

Now how loud do the Swisher to Mariners rumors get? Yankees need pitching and the M's have an over-abundance.

I thought Olson was out of options, I kept reading that at the time of the Pie-Olson trade. I'll double check, but I'm pretty sure he's out of options. If he isn't out of options, well that just makes this trade look worse...

on its own, getting heilman for cedeno is so-so...when coupled with the dishing of DeRosa, i think it is a disaster.

Cedeno could conceivably fill DeRosa's utility shoes, though the latter is more consistent at the plate.

Dealing the two of them is one thing, but right now it doesn't seem like much was received in return...as in nothing.

I would have preferred to keep last year's club intact over this. but who knows...............sigh.

I've been Jim Hendry backer for a number of years. But this trade is just indefensible. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to trade for Aaron Heilman.

That's true, I forgot about Valbuena. Hopefully, this pushes Yuniesky to shape up or ship out. Also, it allows us to play Lopez more at first base and potentially at 3rd if we end up getting rid of Beltre, which I most definitely do not want to do.

Wow. Only 17. Francoeur has more than doubled that and I thought he had a huge problem.

From the Cubs point of view, I guess they are just adding pitching depth? I can't say I am broken up over the loss of Cedeno and Olson. Cedeno sucks and is out of options. He can easily be replaced. I have studied Olson since the Pie trade, and he isn't anything special either.

SD may like Olson, but I see no way they are basing a deal around him. Samardzija needs to be a setup guy this year. Marshall is needed as the swing guy to cover Harden. I'll assume Heilman will be the 5th starter if he has a decent spring (baring another trade). They will need another IF now as they only have 6 on their 40 man roster that I can see.

Basically this is a garbage for garbage trade, with each team having a need for certain garbage.

The difference is that the Mariners traded for potential (at a very cheap price), where as the Cubs picked up a 30 year old, 2-pitch 5th starter/middle reliever who is heading into the expensive part of his arbitration years.

Cedeno and Olson aren't going to be all-stars, but I'm not sure why Chicago is giving up on two players who dominated AAA, but have struggled in only 445 AB's and 165 IP (at the MLB level), respectively.
