    Why I Hate the Cardinals.

I am a die-hard Cubs fan and my wife is from the St. Louis area. We go there often to visit and everyone that she knows are Cardinals fans. I don't mind that at all, I mean root for whoever you want. But here's the thing that really agitates me.

I remember a few years ago that St. Louis got some cheesy title of being the best sports town in America. Of course this was when the Rams were good and the Blues were alright. Well, that's nice and everything but St. Louis fans have really let that go to their heads. I always hear from a number of St. Louis fans that they are the best in baseball. Blah, blah, blah. Its like the most popular kid in school having to tell everyone that he is the most popular kid in school. If you have to say it, then you are not. But here's the most ridiculous thing about it.

I got in an argument with a couple of them today that were arguing with me that they are the best fans in baseball. They told me, "Cardinals fans cheer when we turn double-plays, and they cheer when we have long at-bats that result in walks." WOW! REALLY? So do Cubs fans! And Yankees fans, and Tigers fans, and even Pirates and Royals fans. They went on to tell me that they gave their players standing-o's when the did well and curtain calls! Again, WOW! Really? St. Louis is the only place that does this?

They said "we cheered Edmonds when he returned to Busch Stadium". Well, true (I was at that game) and they booed him every other time he came to bat. And I heard numerous Cardinals fans shouting things in Edmonds general direction that were not so "classy". Every time I go to Busch I see a thousand "Cubs Suck" shirts/signs, etc. Not to mention if the Cubs lose, Carinals fans are on them shouting and throwing out the old "1908" crap.

Now, don't get me wrong. Cubs fans do the same thing and have very derogatory things to say about the Cardinals players and their fans at Wrigley. But the most aggrivating thing is that we (Cubs fans) don't continously call ourselves the "best fans in baseball". In my opinion we are without question the most loyal, but I am no better a fan of the Cubs that someone in New York that religiously follows the Yankees.

This crap about St. Louis being the best sports city is nonsense. No one cares about the Rams, no one cares about the Blues, why? Hmm. I wonder. If the Cardinals fail to make the playoffs for the next 10 season you can bet fan support will dwindle.

Now the last thing, that will hopefully help to not cause this post to become a bash-fest is that I also have a few friends that are avid Cardinals fans that I don't think have ever told me the "Cubs suck". I respect that. I never go around yelling "Cards suck" or any nonsense like that at games. I watch the Cubs, cheer for them, and if they lose, well that's the end of it. If we win, I walk out of the stadium giving high fives to other Cubs fans but I don't get in Cards fans faces giving them crap. Again, all a true fan needs to do is cheer for his team, not degrade other teams and fans. The point of this is that St. Louis fans are no different than any other city, but boy they sure do act like they're sh!t don't stink.

While yes the Best fans in any sport is total bogus, you cannot look down upon our loyalty. The die hard fans like me are/will wait out the talent turnover of the Rams and Blues. The Cardinals won't spend money, so they have to develop from within. We have nice prospects, they just need to get here fast.

Now I will take the immature route and say:

      100 years!! HAHAHAHAH

That was a joke. Baseball fans should be fans of the sport, not players, not teams. The sport. End of discussion.

Btw, I want to give an example of how good of fans we are. Just saying:

Larry Walker's first at-bat in a Cardinals uniform, he comes up as a pinch hitter. Strikes out on 3 pitches, what does he get in return? A standing ovation and a curtain call.

Not saying any fans are better than any others but just giving an example. I hate this argument.

Why? I'm a huge fan of baseball and if there is a game on I will likely watch it, regarldess of the team (mostly...lol). I even live of of MLB Network now. That said, I'm also a huge fan of the Red Sox. I do root against other teams (mainly divisional/widlcard opponents).

I can't possible imagine rooting for anyone else but the Sox, but that doesn't diminsih my love for the game itself. I guess I'm just saying you can be fans of both?

More on topic, to the OP: you have bad fans in every city. My in-laws (Astros fans) were threatened and harrassed non-stop at a Cubs game by a couple of group of guys at Wrigley. Then after the game, they were harrased at a restaraunt by a different bunch for having "the nerve" to wear their Astros gear at the joint. Do you think it would be fair for them to characterize Cubs fans based on that?

I've also rarely met a Cubs fan who wasn't obnoxious and defensive...no exxageration. BUT, I've known a couple (one a pretty good buddy) who's awesome. I choose to ignore the idiots. That's just me

Also, yelling things like 1908 is just razzing by most fan groups. I personally don't see a problem with it. There's an easy way for that to go away (well, maybe not so easy...lol), and that's win again. No more jokes. Remember too, this is coming from a guy who heard "1918 hahaha" his whole life up until a few years ago...lol.

I'll be honest, Why do you care if they (or anyone else, for that matter) calls them the best fans? All that little vote was were someone esles opinion. It doesn't mean it's true. Thicken that skin...lol...you'll need it until your boys win it all (trust me, I know...lol)

I personally think the Cardinals fans are a great group and extremely loyal...but I'd say that about the Sox, Cubs, Yankees, etc. (I'm speaking of the obvious, I'm sure there's more).

Basically any group that won't allow it's park to ever be overrun with opposing teams fans are your diehard groups....but ALL fans are "real" fans.

Thanks for your "Why I Hate the Cardinals" banter.

Yes...the Cardinals are the greatest fans in baseball because they wear red to every game......

Look...the only team which matters in the NL anyways is the Phillies.

                QUOTE]

That's exactly the point of this thread. And I agree 100%. Many Cardinals fans are great fans, but so are Cubs fans, and Yankees, Red Sox, whatever. But Cardinals fans are the only one's (that I've ever seen) that CONTINUOUSLY call THEMSELVES the "greatest fans in baseball". I'm not saying they are not good fans. But they are no better than any other avid fan of any team. Its just comical to me to have these arguments with people that think things like standing-o's only happen at Cardinals games. I asked my wifes friends if they have ever been to any other stadium besides Busch and Wrigley and they said no. I've been to nearly 10 ballparks and again, the fans are "generally" the same.

You have your loyal, classy fans that will say good game even if they're team loses. You have your fans that are sore losers. You have your drunk, obnoxious fans. You have your fair-weather fans that have no idea what the difference is between a 2-seam fastball and a 4-seam fastball (but they will act like they do). Every baseball team has all of these and that's the point.

First of all, the same thing happened at Wrigely with Nomar. Standing ovation when he came to bat. He hit into a double-play and was still cheered.

Secondly, if the Cardinals fans really did give Walker a curtain call for striking out, that's ridiculous and borderline insanity. I highly doubt that actually happened and won't believe it unless I can see video or a news article about it. If fans start demanding curtain calls for every little thing then they become no big deal. We will wait and see how Aaron Miles is received at Busch this year. Something tells me he won't exactly get a warm welcome.

Actually its 101 years. And I agree its to the point that its laughable. In fact we are way past that point. But I have to disagree with the second thing you said. Baseball fans should not root for teams? What are you doing? Will there ever be a point when you are not a Cardinals fan. I hope that is not the case.

To when stroehmerbaseball said the thing about Larry Walker i'd like to point something else out. A couple years back when Griffey Jr. was on the Reds he hit his 500 home run all of the fans gave him a standing ovation. That was pretty awesome.

And you guys honestly don't think that would happen in any other stadium? Come on. What about when Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game in Atlanta. And by the 8th inning the entire stadium was cheering for him. Going crazy after every strikeout. That was awesome.
