I remember a few years ago that St. Louis got some cheesy title of being the best sports town in America. Of course this was when the Rams were good and the Blues were alright. Well, that's nice and everything but St. Louis fans have really let that go to their heads. I always hear from a number of St. Louis fans that they are the best in baseball. Blah, blah, blah. Its like the most popular kid in school having to tell everyone that he is the most popular kid in school. If you have to say it, then you are not. But here's the most ridiculous thing about it.
I got in an argument with a couple of them today that were arguing with me that they are the best fans in baseball. They told me, "Cardinals fans cheer when we turn double-plays, and they cheer when we have long at-bats that result in walks." WOW! REALLY? So do Cubs fans! And Yankees fans, and Tigers fans, and even Pirates and Royals fans. They went on to tell me that they gave their players standing-o's when the did well and curtain calls! Again, WOW! Really? St. Louis is the only place that does this?
They said "we cheered Edmonds when he returned to Busch Stadium". Well, true (I was at that game) and they booed him every other time he came to bat. And I heard numerous Cardinals fans shouting things in Edmonds general direction that were not so "classy". Every time I go to Busch I see a thousand "Cubs Suck" shirts/signs, etc. Not to mention if the Cubs lose, Carinals fans are on them shouting and throwing out the old "1908" crap.
Now, don't get me wrong. Cubs fans do the same thing and have very derogatory things to say about the Cardinals players and their fans at Wrigley. But the most aggrivating thing is that we (Cubs fans) don't continously call ourselves the "best fans in baseball". In my opinion we are without question the most loyal, but I am no better a fan of the Cubs that someone in New York that religiously follows the Yankees.
This crap about St. Louis being the best sports city is nonsense. No one cares about the Rams, no one cares about the Blues, why? Hmm. I wonder. If the Cardinals fail to make the playoffs for the next 10 season you can bet fan support will dwindle.
Now the last thing, that will hopefully help to not cause this post to become a bash-fest is that I also have a few friends that are avid Cardinals fans that I don't think have ever told me the "Cubs suck". I respect that. I never go around yelling "Cards suck" or any nonsense like that at games. I watch the Cubs, cheer for them, and if they lose, well that's the end of it. If we win, I walk out of the stadium giving high fives to other Cubs fans but I don't get in Cards fans faces giving them crap. Again, all a true fan needs to do is cheer for his team, not degrade other teams and fans. The point of this is that St. Louis fans are no different than any other city, but boy they sure do act like they're sh!t don't stink.
