My favorite part is where they chuckle about WAR being accurate because it confirms that good players from the past were good. As if that's a bad thing.

I mentioned to Fregosi a recent argument with a 25-year-old stat-head in which he tried to convince me of WAR's value by pointing out Henry Aaron and Willie Mays ranked very high in the category.

Fregosi laughed slightly and said: "I guess that confirms it -- the Hammer and Willie were good players. And [Roberto] Clemente probably did pretty well, too."
      Uh...yeah...that does confirm it.

      What's the problem here?

It's a never ending battle because people like that don't ever want to be wrong. For them to see that WAR is a strong statistic would be them agreeing that advanced statistics help the game.

          We're dealing with children here.

Seriously, if you can't even take the time to figure out what OPS is (which is on-base % + slugging %; it's really as simple as it sounds), then you're just being difficult.

I want someone to develop a stat that is basically Batting Average with a different name.

Maybe call it At-bat Average and shorten it to ABAs. I'd love to see how crazy these guys go over the quality of ABAs in evaluating baseball players.

Well, it is Patrick Reusse. He used to like to take shots at the St. Paul Saints because he doesn't like fun things.

The funny thing is that the entire preview focused on the Twins lineup from a sabermetrics angle. I'm sure they asked Reusse to write about them, and this is what he came up with. He called up one of his favorite "old-timers" and had a curmudgeon circle J.

There were enough strawmen in that column to scare every crow out of the state of Iowa, but this quote in particular stood out: "If I'm looking for a utility infielder, I don't care about OPS."

                  I laughed at that too.

Ok, maybe you don't necessarily need a good hitter if you're looking for a guy to play the field and multiple positions.

But what's wrong with finding a utility player that can also hit? It's so backwards to say: if I'm looking for a fielder, he doesn't need to hit.

Why not? Why not have a fielder that can hit? It's ridiculous to say you only want one skill players.

                  Oh well.

Depends on what you're willing to pay/trade for sometimes I guess. There are moments when you need certain role players, and utility guys are good in the sense that they can kind of fill in for anyone if you need them to. Maybe they'll be the worst hitter in the lineup, but one in every nine isn't the end of the world and I'm sure you'll land some hits every so often.

That's understood. But, his comment makes it seem like he only wants a Utility Guy that can play all positions.

All I'm saying is you should first want a Utility Guy that can play all positions and hit. If you can't get the hitter, then you go down the line.

By this guy's thinking, hitting doesn't matter so long as the guy can field. That's crazy. Everything should matter first.

Ruesse is a very old-school curmudgeon.

He writes fantastic articles when he limits himself to the experience of the game, past players, atmosphere, etc, while being story teller.

His opinion articles and anything that involves a statistic of one kind or another are complete horse****.
