I don't have a problem with walks. Turn off the pitching icon and strike zone, that helps.

I think walks are definitely a part of the game. I can draw my share, especially against pitchers with less than average control. I've also walked my share of batters...usually the better hitters when I'm more trying to hit spots than to just throw strikes. But that's the way it should be, right?

I honestly haven't played HH or WSB this year. I bought WSB last year, but I got bored with it after a while. It's not something I can put my finger on, but ASB just feels like...well...baseball.

Plus it has an amazingly deep franchise mode.

I've had ASB, WSB, and HH. I stuck with ASB and I love it. I still have WSB but it looks as good as new. I'll probably trade it in when NBA Street drops. I got rid of HH already!

I have HH, WSB, ASB, MVP and MLB and I prefer ASB. HH is just too dull looking, WSB is too arcadey to me...I just could never get the sliders right and just got tired of the 20-25 hits a game every game. MVP will end up being a decent game in a few years, but it needs refinement. MLB is actually a pretty nice game, but it's only on PS2, so I don't play it much since I prefer XBOX. I hung with ASB since it has nice graphics, decent gameplay, proves a challenge everytime I play it, and I think it's just a lot of fun.

Would you say ASB is a sim, given the gameplay issues (pinpoint control over pitches, fielding gaffs, etc.) Do you find the AI an intelligent baseball strategist?

There are certainly issues in the AI. For example, I have had the computer trot out poor relievers in situations where the closer should be in the game and it is the third game of a series so I know their closer has not pitched recently. I have had the computer bring in the starting pitcher from the day before as a reliever in an extra inning game as well. I know that they need to put a starter in there at that point, but it would never be the guy from the day before. The computer generally bunts at the right times and almost always throws to the correct base on defense, so I think those aspects are fairly strong. The computer almost always swings on 3-0 counts, that bugs me. I am not a programmer so I have no idea what has to be done to correct AI flaws or how close to reality they can get, but I have not played many games that have better AI than this one. Perhaps the programmers themselves are in need of some assistance when it comes to the subtler nuances of the game (not swinging on 3-0 etc.)

Thanks, HMMcoy, I'll check out the icon with Thome. Maybe lefty righty is implemented in the game, huh? A previous post indicated otherwise and the roster managment doesn't break down ratings for righty and lefty. Anyhow, did you try any of the other games and what was your reason for sticking with ASB? Purely animation and graphics?

                                <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I have ASB, WSB and believe it or not, HH. All the games have great strengths and unexplainable weaknesses but there is one thing that brings me back to ASB....The pitch speeds.

No matter how much I try to like WSB and to a lesser extent HH, those slow, slurvy, loopy 10-seconds-to-reach-the-plate pitches just turn me off. Sometimes in ASB, against the best pitcers, your brain barely has time to instruct your fingers to press the button before the ball is in the catchers mitt.

I just can't get past that.

ASB's gameplay and batting interface have both been crucified relentlessly in the media but in the end it's the very, very best at representing what must go through a batters mind while standing at the dish. It's the tension, pure and simple.

Then add the features, the best franchise, and great atmosphere and I'm an unapologetic fanboy.

Do this. Put in WSB. Play against the Red Sox w/ your most challenging settings. Face Pedro for 1 inning and pretend it's game 7 of the World series, bottom of the ninth with bases loaded. One hit and you win it all! ....Then put in ASB, All-Star difficulty, normal pitches, normal batting with the same situation in your head. Pedro will rip you a new a**-hole.

YOU.....WILL.....FEEL...HELPLESS!! That is how you SHOULD feel facing Pedro, see the difference?

                                Try it!
