Re: Okay Thats It..... Ive Had Enough

I have to agree that a team is yours no matter how poor/bad they are, and sticking with them. Last year I only went to two Mets games because they weren't all that exciting to watch (I must have watched only about 50 games of theirs on tv...another low) so I can see how the original poster might not find this team all that exciting. But g-dammit...I will not leave the team or stop rooting for them or stop poring over the boxscores. If I'm not leaving when Vince Coleman is throwing firecrackers, AY's challenging all-time loss records, Eddie Murray's being an *** to reporters, Bobby Bo is dogging it, Cone gets traded for a talentless outfielder and an infielder who leaves before he becomes almost great, or even Davey Johnson being fired for a 20-22 record after being a gift from heaven (and later showing how good a manager he is by winning divisions as a manager on two other teams afterwards) then I'm not leaving now. And a person who has grown along with a team and has vivid memories (both positive and negative) of watching games on tv and in person SHOULDN'T want to leave that team either. If the Mets aren't fun to watch...watch other teams more often, but don't switch loyalties. Watch some Sunday night baseball instead of the Mets games then, but don't leave poor Roger Cedeno to the wolves because you can't stand to watch him play center. Art Howe agrees with you. Watch Zito and Mulder pitch and admire their skill...but then root for them to go to the Mets instead of rooting for the A's. I just can't understand jumping teams...but maybe that's because I follow the teams too much.

The Yanks have taken steps to be much more intelligent than they were in the past...but they also are a bit luckier than they have been and use their money to cover up their mistakes. When you can throw enough money around, some of it will lead in high rewards (Giambi, El Duque, Matsui) while some of it will be completely wasted ($25+ million for Morales, Henson, and Adrian Hernandez down the tubes, not to mention Irabu). Of course, when you hit success with playoff appearances, the negatives don't get mentioned, especially when they stay in the minors. They've developed their own talent, true, but then again they almost traded Soriano to the Padres three years ago, but the Padres demanded Jiminez who was considered the better prospect (even ranked that way by the Yanks). So they've been lucky too. I guess I would make the argument that money helps make teams look intelligent when they aren't necessarily all that smart...or perhaps money prevents teams from being in situations where they can be made to look smart on their own merits. Or something like that.

I gotta admit I could not take the Dallas Green/Jeff Torborg era. I watched, I rooted, i lost my lunch regularly. I was not advocating giving up on them, but I am a baseball fan above being a Mets fan. Watching Cedeno butcher the game is gut wrenching. I just think it's healthy to decrease the time you spend watching a team that is dogging it, especially if the club notices that attendance and viewership is down. Meanwhile, might as well enjoy baseball, if you have to watch another team a few nights a week to do it, than so be it.

I came back to the mets full time as soon as Bobby V showed up. He didn't make them win right away, but he made them play hard and you can't ask for more. Art Howe has inherited a tough situation, I just hope he does as well as he did in Oakland.

I definitely agree that sometimes a team is easier to watch than others...like I said, last year was tough for me to watch. But it still seems foreign to me to root for a different team on a prolonged basis, rather than rooting for the Cubs one day on a random day you catch a Cubs-Padres day and you want to see Mark Prior do well.

Thanks for all the posts guys. I may have not been too clear before. I still like the Mets... as a team and a concept. I like a lot of their younger "superstars in the making." But the Cedenos of the world are just too much. I watch him.... he is a terrible CF... but I could handle it if I thought he was trying his best. If I knew he was as good as he can be and was giving it his all. But hes not. He's a .... to borrow a quote from one of the previous replies a "lazy bum" who gets paid millions to hit below the Mendoza line. I can live with Burnitz. He was an original Met. Hes not the most talented, but he does try. Alomar is a mystery to me... maybe hes not "built" for the NL. I just don't see why he is still struggling here. Floyd seems like a wash to me. He's not hitting... and his defense was never a selling point. He looks bored in the outfield on every play. Hell, I would rather have Timo or Shinjo... they look like they are giving it there all. My biggest disappointment is big Mo. Ive been a fan since the Boston days. Being a big guy myself, I always route for the "big" althletes of the world.... Oliver Miller, Cecil Fielder, Mo, Warren Sapp (although I realize a crap load of Sapp's mass is pure muscle )..... the list goes on. I watch Mo and I don't think he's "going through the motions." He looks like he's trying. I just don't think he has what it takes anymore. That injury in Anaheim must have pushed his body past the point of a complete recovery. But back to the point... I could live with the team if they showed some heart. But the majority of them do not. I could live with the struggles if not for the salaries. But not when we have the 2nd or 3rd highest in all baseball. Minnesota intrigues me because they are doing so well on basically Alex Rodriguez's salary. I will continue to route for the Mets in spirit. I keep checking the box scores everyday (as nauseous as that has become the last few days). But I cant put all my effort into anymore. I cannot finish a game in WSB or High Heat with the Mets either. Its just too demoralizing to see those guys (or at least their digital likeness) playing hard, when I know its not a representation of the real Mets. I know the Mets will be good again in the next few years if Howe is given some room to work. We can gut many of the high salaries next year and start from scratch. The future is there and I will be waiting. I am just sad because I know Piazza career will probably be on the downside (if not over) before we give him the chance to see greatness again. He is the best example on the Mets of "heart." He plays day in and day out with passion for the game. I feel bad for him when he has to see 3 to 5 of his teammates "phone it in." He deserves so much better than he's getting right now. Oh well, back to trying a WSB season with Minnesota... the only downside is I hate the AL

gotta back up your opinion on Piazza. Two weeks ago he grounded out to end the game I was at. With his meager speed there was no chance in hell he would beat it out, but he ran his butt off to first and made it damn close. It was one of those plays you hold your breath on because you are afraid he may pull something running so hard. If Cedeno ran like that ever he'd be an above average player, if Alomar would run through the bag like that, he might get an infield hit now and then. ARRRGGH, enough about the MESS I don't want my lasagna to come back up.
