Bonds was great when he was with the Pirates...his last two years he was MVP and came in second (to Terry Pendleton, but he should have won). That's greatness. He was great based on natural ability, and the fact that he (like Griffey Junior) was destined to be a baseball player and was around it all of his life and made it his focus from a young age. Think he spent time giving a damn about algebra? Not even an option...he knew he was going to be a baseball player and could put the time in.
As for how he got to be a phenomenal player...I agree with smaller parks and perhaps weaker pitching.
As for how he got to be so big compared to how he used to be...human growth hormone. It aids in the maturation of the body, and when your body has too much of it, it develops too much. An extreme case of this is Andre the Giant (of WWF fame) who was a man-beast and who had a disorder that caused his body to produce too much human growth hormone. Common visible effects of having too much of the hormone is an increase in forehead size and chin size (again, think of the extreme case of Andre). Now...doesn't Barry seem to have a larger forehead and chin than he did a decade ago? Yeah...that's what I thought...
