Besides, if you are going to use the "maybe he should call (insert known steroid user here)" joke for Ortiz, Manny is probably the most logical player in all of baseball to use, a player on Ortiz's rival is probably one of the least.

Wouldn't matter, they all probably have the same supplier.

Yep, that clubhouse guy from the Mets.

See how it goes? You can't place faith on the Mets. Just blame them for everything.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Francona is benching Ortiz a couple games in Seattle.

Probably not a bad idea. Maybe a couple of days off will help Papi re-focus and get it going.

Wrist injury + no Manny + no more PEDs = one ugly downfall.

Looks like he is turning into Mo Vaughn to me without the weight gain, but the similar career trajectory. Too bad too cause I've always liked Big Papi.

Mo was more consistent. Ortiz has only had like 4-5 good years but Vaughn had a .300/30/100 line pretty much every year from 1993-2002...Also, Vaughn actually played 1B.

Can Edgar Martinez safely be called the greatest DH of all-time now that Ortiz has completely fallen apart and only had five good seasons?

                      Re: David Ortiz...Zero home runs?

Vaughn's age 33 season was 2002 when he hit 26 homeruns for the Mets and was only healthy enough for 487 at bats. By age 34, he was done. Ortiz is in his age 33 season right now. If not for the '94 strike, Vaughn probably would have hit 30 or more homeruns, giving him 7 such seasons for his career. Ortiz has 5. If you look at their seasonal averages per 162 games, they're almost identical:

                      Vaughn: .293/.383/.523 35 Homeruns and 114 RBI
                      Ortiz: .285/.380/.547 35 Homeruns 119 RBI

Vaughn to Ortiz is a pretty fair comparison. Vaughn's career ended because of his knees. Like Ortiz, he hit from a crouch (even more severe than Ortiz) and once his knees were gone he couldn't generate anything from that croutch. It didn't help that his last few years he was bigger than Santa Claus. Vaughn was also implicated in the Mitchell Report so he may have been able to extend his career through drugs where Ortiz cannot due to testing.

To be fair to Mo Vaughn, he completely shredded the tendons in his right knee which is what basically ended his career.

I still think Ortiz could benefit from batting lower in the lineup as the longer he slumps the more he will press, especially in run producing situations. He has shown signs of life here and there so i'm not willing to say he is done...yet.

While I completely agree w/ that assessment, I will add a reminder that he's ONLY 33 years old.

I recall some other posters throwing out age as an excuse for his declining performance, I'm not buying that.

To be fair, for power hitters, especially ones with his type of build, this is around the time they usually start to show some decline. Add in the fact he's coming off knee and wrist injuries, it makes sense.

In watching him, I just don't see him as a PED user.

First off, what's up BK? (I see you canned your LAA Dynasty?)

Back on-topic, the highlighted font will represent exactly why Barry Bonds is guilty for PED's - for ALL of those that are still in denial.

                              That is all.

                                Agreed on Bonds.

I didn't kill the Angels dynasty. The patch did . I didn't want to play all those same games over again, so I played with a randomly selected team. The Royals. Having a blast so far.
