1.because pitcher's arms aren't conditioned like they used to be
2. today's pitcher's get paid way too much to risk injury
3. I'll tell ya who cares about pitch counts, any pitcher who's ever had arm surgery.
Look at the track record of guys who pitched for the Giants under Dusty Baker. I'm not sure there is another team who has had more pitching careers cut short. Luckily, the front office was smart enough(most of the time) to move the guys out of SF before they totally crumbled.

Who says pitchers arms are not conditioned like they used to be? Given players in general are better conditon it only makes sense that their arms would be to.
Plenty of Pitchers got hurt in the past, you just don't remember them because they got hurt and disappeared.
The only thing certain about pitch counts is that if a pitcher gets hurt everyone will blame the manager and high pitch counts. Their is no way to have a "test Kerry Wood" that only throws 100 pitches a game and the "real Kerry Wood", this makes it real easy for sportswriters and armchair guys like us to blame the manager and pitch counts because we can't be proven wrong.
