    Pitchers using Sand Paper???

Can someone please explain to me how using Sand Paper gives a pitcher an unfair advantage?

It puts grooves and roughs up the baseball, causing odd movement.

Yeah it gives the ball extra movement. This is the same reason why after a ball is thrown in the dirt the umpire gives the pitcher a new ball.

esp. when the ball is smooth otherwise, and you have a guy that can throw w/ some heat. MIke Scott won a div. title and tossed a no-no with sand paper. then the umps started cheking and his career was over

There was also the case of Phil Niekro (I think it was him) where the umps went out to check him and video shows him reaching in his pocket and pulling out a nail file. He then drops it on the ground. The umps see it, but he acts like he has no clue what it was. Pitchers have used all kinds of stuff to get extra movement on their ball.

I thought it was because pitchers like using pearls, and they don't want to use the ones in the dirt.

I remember that, but I believe it was actually Joe Niekro who tossed the emory board, I'm sure Phil did his share also.
