Hey LetsGoBucs, haven't seen you post in awhile.

Supposedly, this Weaver-Giles trade talk is starting to heat up, and its ANNOYING me!!

This is a crap deal. We would we even want Weaver? He's scheduled to make $9 + million in either 04 or 05. Giles is one of the best outfielders in the game. Period!

Spanky and Sluggo were a great platoon at catcher, weren't they?

Right now, I'd almost rather take Keith Osik over Kendall, at least defensively.

Spanky and Sluggo were an AWESOME combo. The great thing about them both was that they also called good games and helped bring along the pitching staff. I don't think enough is ever said about the intangibles a good catcher can do for a ballclub. See, these are the reasons why most Pirate fans feel Jason Kendall is over-hyped, overpaid, and overrated:

                  1. He doesn't throw baserunners out.
                  2. He doesn't seem to handle a pitching staff very well.
                  3. He doesn't hit for power.
                  4. He doesn't drive in runs.
                  5. He doesn't bunt or sacrifice, which is why he should NOT hit in the 2 slot.
                  6. He doesn't appear to be any kind of a positive influence in the clubhouse. If anything, he has a negative influence.

Does he have some talent? Yes, some. He's a line drive, singles hitter that can show some patience at the plate and will draw walks. He also has decent speed. Which makes him either a leadoff hitter (although he doesn't steal many bases) or a number 7 or 8 hitter. In this lineup, probably a 7 hitter. Now, not to keep beating a dead horse, but only the great Cam would sign a #7 or #8 hitter to THAT contract.

I agree with all of your points about Kendall.

I can't totally blame Cam for the contract though, because at the time, he was considered one of the few good players on the team. Too bad he's been getting worse every year since signing the thing.

Something else about Kendall. Does he ever hit with less than two strikes? He takes at least one pitch right down the middle each at bat. Because of that, he has to swing defensively almost every at bat. I bet if he actually swung the bat before the 3rd-4th pitch, he'd do better.

Good point..Kendall does leave the bat on his shoulder early in the count.

Here's a thought: the last two times the Pirates had a valuable lefty in the bullpen, they were traded with favorable results:

Jason Christensen to St. Louis for Jack Wilson
Ricardo Rincon to Cleveland for Brian Giles

So, since history has a way of repeating itself, can we expect to get a surprisingly good return for Scott Sauerbeck?
