    Re: Pirate Fans (Please Read)

I think that was the one (Reboulet's bunt)...

A few random thoughts before I hit the sack...

Jeff Reboulet symbolizies what is good about baseball. He also reminds us what's wrong with the game today. Too many overpaid athletes working for the big bucks, but losing sight of how to actually play the game to win. It's all about stats nowadays because stats get the money. There's no glory in a sacfrice bunt or hitting to the right side. I'm surprised Reboulet never seemed to get a real shot anywhere (I know he was with the Orioles for quite a while).

Hope Kenny Lofton keeps hitting so we can get more for him in a trade.

Speaking earlier about the Post-Gazette, the king of gloom and doom (Bob Smizik) brought up a point about Jason Kendall moving to second base so Craig Wilson could become the everyday catcher, at least until maybe Cota is ready. I'm wondering if this will ever happen. It's been discussed before. Now, with Pokey Reese gone (for good after the season) and the fact no one will take on Kendall's contract, this may have some merit. At least until Jose Castillo is ready.

I live in Altoona, PA, so I get to see many of the Curve's games. The Bucs have got some really good prospects at AA, especially with pitchers Sean Burnett and John Van Benschoten. They also have an outfielder named Shawn Garrett, who came to the Bucs from the Padres for, I believe, Dan Miceli. I really like Garrett. He reminds me of a Mark Kotsay-type player. Hope he eventually gets a shot.

Speaking of Kotsay, always thought he'd look good in black and gold. Also like Trot Nixon from the Bosox.

This thread is really going places! If Padre fans can have their own thread, why can't we?

Does anyone else think that there is (or at least was) an organizational problem with the Bucs? A problem that ran deeper than Bonifay? When was the last time they developed a really great (or even really good) major league player? All these 'Hot Prospects' turn out to be busts. It can't all be bad luck. I remember when the Bucs had the number 1 rated farm system. But their players never pan out (cough, cough, Hermanson, cough, cough). Hermanson is just one example of busts. Warren Morris is another that comes to mind. The last one I can remember doing anything was Neagle (who we got from Minnesota and I can't remember how long he was in the Bucs system before he hit the bigs).

Speaking of Jason Kendall, did anyone read an article after last season talking about how alot of the players were pissed at Jack Wilson and Pokey Reese because they played the game with too much energy? The two main players P.O.'d were Jason Kendall and Kevin Young. I think it's about time that something was done with Kendall.

Nice to see Ramirez finally starting to hit though... Hope he turns it around. And it's nice to have a baseball discussion with some Bucs fans for a change. I live in Boston and Sox fans have no idea what it's like to be excited that their team may finish .500!!!

That assinine! How do you play with "too much energy"?!

Kendall can kiss my ***... Jack Wilson is my favorite Pirate these days because he DOES play with so much energy and that guy gives 110% on EVERY play! Nothing pleased me more to see Jack flourishing in the #2 spot.. I think he has gotta have the best glove at SS in the entire NL, BAR NONE!

I got to meet Jack once, he was down at the mall for a signing, I walked right past him at first and didn't really recognize him, but I kept thinking, he looked familiar... on my way back through there they sat... Jack Wilson, Joe Beimel, Kip Wells, Dave Williams and Lanny Fratare. However my daughter was more occupied with the Pirate Parrot...lol

Since the mall was dead and there was no line for autographs I got to speak to each of the players for like 4-5 minutes each... Kip is an awesome guy, Jack had gotta a cellphone call and had to leave the table, but at the time his wife was expecting, so I understood.

I really like watching Jack Wilson play as well. His defense is outstanding and he keeps getting better at the plate each year. I wish they would move him back to 2nd in the order as well. Nice to hear that he is a nice guy as well. I had an opportunity to meet some Red Sox players in Baltimore after a game last year. I talked to Jason Veritek for a few minutes because I had watched him play in high school. Friends of mine got pictures with Tony Clark, Derek Lowe, and Casey Fossum. All of them were really cool (suprisingly!)

I had to get the MLB Extra Innings package up here to see the Buccos. It was well worth it because I think I get more games that people in Pittsburgh do. Not only can I get Pirate broadcasts, but I can also get the other team's broadcast as well. So each night, I have a chance to see the Bucs!

Actually it's gotten better... on most nights you can catch a Bucco game on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh, it's actually a rare occurance when it's pre-empted for something else.

Oh, for Christmas last year, my brother bought me two Jack Wilson cards, one's refractive, is numbered and autographed... the other has a game jersey piece from spring training last year, and is numbered and autographed. I've got Pedro, Ripken, and many other rookie cards, but all in all my favorite cards are my two Jack Wilsons...

I too have Extra Innings, and I really like the fact that I get the other team's broadcast half the time. Not only does it give a different perspective on the game, but I really can't stand Greg Brown.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kendall move to second. That said, I have a feeling that he'd be a real prick about it, because he is looking more and more like a big time jerk. Right now I'll take anyone who's not a total zero behind the plate. Watching the two games last night really showed me the difference between Kendall and Wilson.

Is anyone else baffled by Mac's insistance at using Young as a defensive replacement (as early as the 7th inning)? Randall Simon has been a pleasant surprise defensively, and has turned in more than his share of good plays with the glove. Not to mention the fact that Young can't hit to save his life these days.

Why was Nunez batting in the 9th inning last night? You already used Reboulet, so you have a replacement already in the game. I'm glad Kendall came through the next at bat, because that inning was smelling like another "Bases loaded with no out, strike out, double play" inning.

At least Mac came to his senses and sent down Rob "K" Mackowiak.
