If you were GM of the Pittsburgh Pirates...

We're all smarter than the Cam Bonifays of the world right?

If you were GM of the Pirates, what moves would you make in the next couple of months? Maybe the offseason?

    Here's some questions:

Should the Bucs deal Kenny Lofton to a contender? What do you get in return?

Who do you think are the most tradable players on the Bucs? And, who do you get for them?

Or, are you in the minority that thinks we should trade Brian Giles? If you do, make your case here!

Where to begin, wheeeerrre toooo begin!

Firt order of business is flat out release Kevin Young, we're paying the guy, he's not doing squat, might as well get him off the roster to make room for someone else.

Deal Jason Kendall, don't give him up for peanuts, but try to pick up a bigtime reliever and a prospect or something... IF anyone would go for that, I don't know, but it's worth a shot..

I'm not sure what the FA picture is going to look like this year, but I doubt we'll pursue anyone off of there, unless it's a few small-time players.

I would definitely release Kevin Young when Simon comes off the DL.

If the Phillies are still interested in Lofton, I'd offer him for Marlon Byrd and a prospect.

I'd make Kris Benson available to any and all takers at this point. The Benson-Marcus Giles deal would be made in a heartbeat. If that fell through, I'd offer Benson and Scott Sauerbeck to Cincinnati for Jose Guillen, Gabe White, and a minor leaguer.

I'd let McClendon do his All-Star gig then let him go. I'd name John Russell interm manager until I hire Phil Garner as new manager of the Bucs.

The ONLY way I'd deal Brian Giles is if (1) I get at least two starting position players in return and (2) the team I'm trading with also takes Jason Kendall. I could see the San Diego Padres as a potential trade partner here.

The big rumor of the day is Giles to the Yanks for a package starting with Weaver. The Yanks are also interested in Benson. I would imagine along with Weaver, the Pirates would want Juan Rivera as well. Being a Yankee fan, I say DO THIS DEAL NOW!!! However, there would have to be someone else going to the Pirates in return for Giles.

                      Ooooooookay...

First off, I'd actually sign Lofton to another year. We don't have anyone coming up in the minors that's going to be as good a center fielder as Lofton, so why not keep him around another year? Unless we can get a younger CF in a trade, I wouldn't deal him.

Cut Young. We only owe him this year anyway, and he'll hurt the team less playing golf than he will by using up a spot on the roster.

As much as I'd love to trade Kendall, it's not going to happen. No one is going to want a below-average catcher for that price. The talk is that he might be moved to second, but it will take him a while to learn the position. Just the same, I'd give Craig Wilson a better look at catcher than he's already getting. He might be better than Kendall defensively (he hasn't really had the chance to show whether he is or not).

If history repeats itself, someone will be interested in Reggie Sanders. I think a platoon of Matt Stairs and Wilson/Adam Hyzdu would be more than adequate here for the remainder of the year. Plus we can always call up Tony Alverez if necessary.

I would try to bring in a future closer, since Mike Williams is coming up on a rather expensive option year -- one the Pirates might not pick up. Personally, I would pick up the option year if he continues to close out games like he's done this month (his ERA is under 2 for June).

Re-sign either Suppan or D'Amico (probably Suppan). I'm expecting Vogelsong to be in the rotation next year. I'm keeping Suppan over D'Amico because Suppan has better off the mound skills (fielding, batting, etc).

I'm sure I can come up with more, but I'm supposed to be at work

I think the only way they'd get Giles and Benson in a deal is to deal Weaver and a starting position player, no short of Matsui, and even THEN I don't know if i'd do it...

Thing is the Buccos got a little room to manuever now, so they won't be getting strong-armed into so many bogus deals as in the past.
