I think the only way they'd get Giles and Benson in a deal is to deal Weaver and a starting position player, no short of Matsui, and even THEN I don't know if i'd do it...

Thing is the Buccos got a little room to manuever now, so they won't be getting strong-armed into so many bogus deals as in the past.

The big rumor of the day is Giles to the Yanks for a package starting with Weaver. The Yanks are also interested in Benson. I would imagine along with Weaver, the Pirates would want Juan Rivera as well. Being a Yankee fan, I say DO THIS DEAL NOW!!! However, there would have to be someone else going to the Pirates in return for Giles.

I still don't see how the Yankees match up with what the Pirates need. I'm trying to see the logic here, but I just can't.

Juan Rivera is a good outfield prospect. Jeff Weaver is another Kris Benson, so that's wash. Brandon Claussen would have to be part of any deal with the Yankees.

Plus they don't have Cam "I love Derek Bell" Bonifay running things.

If Littlefield's past has shown anything, it's that he can be very shrewd with player trades. He brought in Wells and Fogg for Todd Ritchie. He's even said that the asking price for Giles is very high.

In addition, the Yankees really don't have anywhere to put Giles last I checked. Their outfield is pretty full, especially once Bernie Williams comes back. They're not going to make a big trade just to have him on the bench, unless this comes out of the Yankee mentality of "Wait! Other teams can't have good players, we must get as many as we can just to have them because we don't mind spending $200 million a year!"

I could see a Weaver and Nick Johnson deal getting it done. If they traded Johnson, then they would have 4 outfielders (Giles, Bernie, Matsui, and Mondesi), and the other could DH. Although I also read that the Yanks are seeing if there is interest in Mondesi right now, in case they got Giles.

                        Doesn't Giambi DH for them?

I can't imagine Steinbrenner even letting Brian Cashman deal with a dogmeat organization like the Pittsburgh Pirates. We surely don't have anything he'd be interested in, do we?

Honestly, if I'm Littlefield, I hold him up for a king's ransom. We don't have to deal Giles. But, okay, here goes:

Brian Giles and Mike Williams to the Yankees for Jeff Weaver, Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera, and Brandon Claussen. Think the Yanks would make that deal?
