If they wait a certain amount of time, which I think is about two weeks, their free agency year will be pushed back one year, so they'll have control of the player for an extra year. If they wait about two months their arbitration years will be pushed back a year.

So it's all about the money.

Exactly. The Rays did it with Longoria a few years ago. I think if you spend 20 games or so in the minors you don't get a full year of service time.

Because we'd rather have a couple more years of team control rather than a couple of weeks in another losing season.

Gotcha. Totally forgot about that whole arbitration loop hole thing.

Did not like what I saw from Rich Harden today.

Got lit up for 6 runs in the 4th by the Padres

Because he's not ready, he has to learn to pitch every fifth day.. Plus the Nats can get big gate boom in June or July..

Are you talking about Strasburg? If so, he doesn't need to "learn" to pitch every fifth day, he was already doing that here at San Diego State.

Am I wrong to assume the college baseball only play on the weekends? Even still you can't compare pitching in college to the majors, in college he can get back throw fast balls not in the bigs..

Nope, they do play on weekdays and have rotations. Here's the San Diego State season schedule.

Even then, Stephen Strasburg did not rely on his 4-seam fastball. It was his knockout slider and 2-seamer that brought him through college. Obviously pitching in college is different than pitching in the majors, but isn't far off from pitching in the minors. There's a reason why scouts are sold on him.

I'm just being cautious... Don't want him to be another Mark Prior or Kerry Woods..

This was brought last year while he was at San Diego State. I believe some one already compared his mechanics to Mark Prior (except Mark Prior had a exaggerated M wing delivery while Strasburg has his elbow level, but the "preferred" delivery is a W wing). Tony Gwynn took extra caution to have him pitch once a week (usually on Fridays) to curtail concerns.

As long as he isn't throwing 130 pitches every outing, he should be fine. As a matter fact, every pitcher has this concern. It's a gamble. If he gets hurt he gets hurt.

True but for the Nats to get off the ground here in DC he can't get hurt early..

This is a silly question though it proves my total ignorance in spring training baseball. How is it possible that today the Cardinals played two games in two different venues, one against Boston, one v Houston? Do they line up formation A and B? Which one does the manager assist?

They're called split squad games. Basically that, different lineups for each game.
