I guess batting average and RBI are meaningless stats, because unless I'm going blind, I see SHJ had more in each category, and their OBP's weren't that far apart.

I'd take Upton over Heyward...now. That's subject to change depending on what Heyward does given the same amount of MLB experience.

I have a soft spot for Justin though because he went to my highschool; graduated a yr ahead of my little sister's class too.

Considering Upton was 20 in his first half season, and increased his average by .50 in under a year, I'd say average does matter. Especially considering Uptons average at 21 trumps Wieters average at 23.

Assuming Wieters can hit close to what Upton or Heyward hits he'll be more valuable since he plays catcher.

Answering the original question, I'll go with Justin Upton because he's already played at an all star level in the MLB while Heyward hasn't had an AB yet.

If you're going to give credit to Upton for doing it at an earlier age (which you should), you have to give Wieters the appropriate credit for doing it at a much more difficult position.

Na, Wieters won't be as valuable as either of the two. Both Heyward and Upton are expected to put up 30/30 seasons, for Upton as soon as this season. With Uptons combination of speed and power, some are saying he may one day reach the holy grail of 40/40.

Understood, but how exactly does playing catcher make it more difficult for him to hit the ball?

Supply and demand. The supply of catchers that can put up big numbers is very, very, very small. The supply of corner outfielders who can put up big numbers is quite large.

If Wieters puts up even remotely similar numbers he's going to be the more valuable player due to the position he plays.

We'll use Joe Mauer as an example. One of the best players in the league bar none, yet he's arguably not even worth a first round pick according to most fantasy experts, and even if he is he tends to be drafted towards the middle or end of the round. Who's number one? Albert Pujols, and he plays the deepest position in baseball, with 2 or 3 other first round picks.
