Livan pitchs 6 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, 3 walks on 3 days rest. Nats win.

Fangraphs writers type angrily away as they continue to be baffled by Livan's start to the year.

I guess if you're going to pitch Kerry Wood, it shouldn't be on May 19th against the Royals.

Aside from Moyland the pen was terrible. Kawakami needs to pitch deeper in the game, that's all there is to it. At least when Wagner pitches the 9th we always end up winning, save or not.

At this point, it might just be worth it to put him on the DL or release him. He's not even close to looking healthy or like the "real" Kerry Wood.

True, but Tampa did it not just against Teixeira. They shifted left and right for other batters too. The extent at which the Devil Rays were shifting throughout the game was impressive. I don't think other teams move around in the infield like Tampa Bay did in this game. And it's not just that. It's the way they steal bases, it's the concept of team baseball that Madden has instilled in his players. It was impressive to see a team win by doing the intangibles. Perhaps other teams will watch the tape and shift more in the infield against the Yankees as the season goes on. It seems as if the Devil Rays really study their opponents. Another example of this was the pickoff that Wade Davis had early in the game. That was a key moment in the game.

Enjoy it while you can. He's the same pitcher he's always been, he's just getting insanely lucky that he's stranding a ton of his baserunners. He still doesn't strike anyone out and doesn't get a ton of groundballs to make up for it. He also doesn't have pinpoint control like someone like Buehrle does.

It's so strange, he's probably pitched as good as or worse than Rich Harden this year and Harden's been terrible.

His start has baffled me, for sure. He can't keep up a start this good.

On a related note, according to fangraphs' current tally, Livan Hernandez (4-2, 1.62 ERA) has been worth less than Kenshin Kawakami (0-6, 4.98 ERA) to date. Livan's WAR is sitting at 0.3 right now. Kawakami's is at 0.4.

Well I was looking forward to listening to the Braves game today at work so the second half of the day will go quicker. Not anymore. 8-0 Reds in the 2nd inning

Ya...an ugly start. He needs to grow up a bit as a pitcher. This year when he hasn't had his good stuff he hasn't adjusted. To be a great pitcher you have to be able to win without your A-game and he can't do that yet.
