Yep, going 7 scoreless only being held back by your defense shows how much you suck.

this inning has been painful to watch, can we give an infielder the L?

Well I've been doing scorebooks and statistics for the past four years for NCAA softball, and one thing the gamecast guy next to me and I always do is determine the runs and earned runs. One of the things, like I said, is that you can't assume double play, but you always give the pitcher the benefit of the doubt otherwise, so in that case you can assume it would have been at least a fielder's choice.

After that, you basically write down what the situation would be had he made that play, and play out the rest of the inning... it would be 1st and 3rd, one out. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center and everyone advanced as a run scores, so that run is earned as the real life situation is runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, and the "would be" situation is just a runner on 2nd with two outs. Then the next batter singled and runner on third scored as the runner on second advanced to third. Again, in the real life situation it's now runners on 1st and 3rd with one out and a run scoring, but in the speculative situation, it's 1st and 3rd with two outs and no run would have scored. Therefore it is an unearned run.

If they made another out on the next batter, like a strike out, your assumed situation is now three outs, and every run that possibly scores after that would be unearned.

Sorry for that rant. I just didn't understand why the runner that should have been out at second wasn't an unearned run, though it seems like they made it the runner on first anyway.

          You're right Blzer.

At most, it should have been two earned runs... that's what the Nats broadcasters are asking as well.

Didn't see this post, gotcha. I know that you in fact are allowed to assume that the runner on the second gets out if you can safely predict that may play out, but you cannot assume double play no matter what.

I think it still should have been three earned runs when all was said and done (which sucks because of that stupid bunt and then the other infield single), but I don't think they put them in the right order. I think that runner that made it to second base on the error should have represented the unearned run, not the runner on first.

Right...I was just saying that the official scorer must have assumed he'd go to first instead of second (although there is no way he would have not gone to second). That's the only way to make it an earned run.

Come on man...there fans and they're excited. I'm pretty sure none of that bothers the players on the field.

Got it. In some respects, at least it didn't go back to haunt the scorekeeper because all runs plus one more scored anyway, but that comes as a detriment to Strasburg's line unfortunately.

I just wanted to make sure they didn't do scorekeeping differently in the MLB than everywhere else I've done the book.

I've done quite a bit of scorekeeping and I was always taught like you mentioned...you recreate the inning without the errors (no dp assumptions) and any runs that wouldn't have scored are unearned.

Hudson has been lights out this year. I wasn't sure when they picked up his contract, but he has been what we thought we were getting back in 2005.

Full credit to Hudson btw... I just think its laughable when the crowd is chanting overrated a a 21 year old kid that just worked over your lineup for 7 straight innings before the defense fell apart.
