    Re: Brian Giles to Angels??

While I wouldn't mind seeing a trade with the players you mentioned in the original post, there are two reasons why I don't think this will happen:

    1. Look at all of the other trades the Pirates made. Littlefield is all about trading for prospects. He isn't going to trade Giles and get three guys around/over 30 in return. If he trades Giles, he will have to get a top prospect in return - which is why he was so serious with San Diego.

    2. The other reason why the players you listed would probably not be attractive for the Pirates is because Littlefield seems to prefer signing older guys as free agents for a year - as opposed to going out and trading for such established players. While I could see him trying to sign someone like Sele for year, I don't see him trading for the guy.

This said - I could see the players you named (Giles, Kendall and Benson) for Erstad and a couple of top prospects. But - just like the Padres - why would the Angels want to trade two of their top prospects for castaways like Kendall and Benson?

I agree with that for the most part.

The trade I proposed was/is contingent on the Angels taking on most, if not all, of Kendall's contract. In order for a team to do that, the Pirates would have to take some large contracts back, like Erstad's and Sele's.

Two things led me to this trade idea: the Angels' interest in Brian Giles and their apparent willingness to deal Erstad this off-season. Giles for Erstad makes no sense for the Pirates by themselves; the package I mentioned could make more sense.

The chances of this deal happening is remote, no doubt. But, from an economic standpoint, it makes good sense for Pittsburgh.
