Re: Brushing Shoulders With Baseball Players? [Stories, Soliloquies & Such]
Well see I was playing in a tournament in Las Vegas 2 summers ago, and there was this 16 year old kid who was supposedly the next greatest baseball player. I didnt believe it until he hit this 900 foot homerun...
But for real
Jerry Augustine (more so his family, but he played high school ball with my dad/pitcher on the AL Pennant Brewers team) are friends of my family.
Erik Cordier (pitcher added to the Braves 40-man roster this year) played for a team in my high school's conference, and I have had a few conversations over the years with him.
My high school health teachers' husband's brother played minor league ball for the Cubs.
I Facebook creeped Jeremy Jeffress last summer, and had some conversations with him, and while he was in Appleton with the Timber Rattlers, he told me to come early to a game and he signed some stuff for me and I probably talked with him for close to an hour.
My best (girl) friend's boy friend is a starting middle infielder for Boston College, and he is projected to be drafted. So Im hoping he signs so he can hook me up with some nice tickets or other stuff.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams

Mike Cuddyer grew up in my neighborhood, and played wiffle ball in my backyard on occasion. My next door neighboor (from my childhood home where my parents still live today) is one of his best friends.Originally posted by Edmund BurkeAll that is needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to do nothing.Comment

Colby Rasmus, CF for the Cardinals, was in our region in high school play. He was such a beast, he attended Russell Co. HS. He took me yard a few times :/
And Gabe Gross of the Oakland A's played at my local high school but it was a few years before my era.1925-1926-1930-1934-1941-1961-1964-1965-1973-1978-1979-1992-2009-2011-2012

Re: Brushing Shoulders With Baseball Players? [Stories, Soliloquies & Such]
I have a few small ones
I went to the same High School as Clayton Kershaw, two years ago during the summer he came back to work out during the off-season. I hit him a few ground balls for PFP, then did some other workouts with him. Didn't say a whole lot to him, was kinda in awe the whole time, luckily so were a lot of my team-mates. Watching him throw a bullpen was the moment I knew I'd never be a MLB prospect, his stuff seemed un-hittable.
I faced Zach Lee once in a summer league once, got K'd, was completely over-matched. He is really good. This was the second time I knew I'd never play in the bigs.
Probably played agaisnt some other prospects from the North Texas/Houston area, but I don't remember any specifically.AUBURN - COWBOYS - RANGERS - INTERComment

Re: Brushing Shoulders With Baseball Players? [Stories, Soliloquies & Such]
don't know if this one counts, but an ex-girlfriend of mine is currently dating the brother of University of South Carolina's star pitcher from last year, Blake Cooper, who was drafted in last years MLB draft. But, I know that doesn't count.
Um, my first one that comes to mind is that I'm related to former Yankee great, Bobby Richardson.
and I played in a high school All-Star basketball game my senior year with Citadel star pitcher, Matt Talley, who was drafted after his junior season by the Diamondbacks.
Can't really think of anymore personal ones, but I have a few from family members.
My dad coached a high school football game against Mookie Wilson and also against Orlando Hudson (not the same game, of course).
a side note - my dad played college baseball at Davidson College with Dick Snider, who went on to play 14 years in the NBA, and Paul "Big Show" Wight played in a football All-Star game in high school and the game was played on my school's field.

Went to my friends house Friday. Looked in his closet and found an authentic Orioles jacket. Turns out, his dad played on the O's in the 80s.HoosiersPacersPhilliesRavens

Last year I had a job at Roger dean in the club house, I met Josh Johnson once playing xbox iin my boss's office. I worked primarily in the minor league part of the clubhouse, so I also met Stanton once oh my was he huge in person but to be honest I didn't know he'd turn out to be a potentially great player at the timeSaints, LSU, Seminoles, Pelicans, Marlins, LightningComment

My dad used to play against Paul Molitor in college.. David Wright is friends with one of my sister in law's friends... ran into former big league catcher Sal Butera at my last job--- shocked that I knew who he was (thanks to my card collecting days)... oh, forgot that a kid down the block from me made it to the Rays and Cubs minors (highest was AA), and my next door neighbor years ago made it to AAA of the Padres as a catcher till his knees gave out.
Only others I ran across were P's Neal Heaton and Paul Gibson when my brother played against their teams in travel baseball...

When I was younger, I had the great opportunity of fishing with Nolan Ryan. Ryan is a great guy, one of those people that begins and ends every conversation with a handshake. Speaking of which, I was probably only 12, but it felt like he was going to crush my hand when he shook it. Still, it's a moment I'll never forget.Rangers - Cowboys - Aggies - Stars - Mavericks

Re: Brushing Shoulders With Baseball Players? [Stories, Soliloquies & Such]
I was a catcher when I played ball. Anyway somehow got hooked up with Brett Jodie. He was rehabbing his shoulder here in Lexington (where he is from) and he needed someone to long toss to and throw bullpen sessions. He asked if I would do it and I said sure. To this day he had the best control I had ever seen. Maybe not the best stuff but control wise it was there.
He played briefly for the Yankees and Padres in the bigs. Then hurt his shoulder in ST with the Red Sox. They cut him but he was going to try out again. He never got his velocity back and went to play independent ball for the Summerset Patriots. He is now their pitching coach. Some of yall from SC may know who he is but I doubt anyone else does.
There was also a reliever I caught at the same time...a buddy of his from the Braves organization who wanted to get ready before he had to report. The guy flamed out real quick and for the life of me I cant think of his name.Comment
