Re: 2011 MLB Trade Deadline Thread

The Mets gave the Brewers some cash in this deal, too. According the Milwaukee Journal, Melvin said it's going to be Axford and K-Rod who will share duties as the closer. He also said it's up to Roenicke how he uses them.

Even though Axford has been good in the save department, he does make it interesting in the ninth by giving up hits and there.

Melvin said he didn't want to pass up on K-Rod if someone goes down in the bullpen. Saito has missed almost the entire 1st half of the season. Melvin said he would be kicking himself if something like that happened if he let K-Rod go.

So basically it was a strategic move to keep K-Rod from other teams and if they really need him to close well that's good too.

      Smart move.

If K-Rod does pitch to his abilities then you have a great 1-2 combo at the back end of the bullpen.
That would be seriously dumb of K-Rod to sulk and whatever in a walk year, personally I do not see that happening. Even if he doesn't have his option vest, he's still pitching for a lot of money becoming a free agent after this season in a populated closers market.

Man, Brewers farm is so barren after all these deals.

Which is crazy considering they had a top 5 system going into this year.

The Brewers are going for broke. If they can keep Fielder (and even if they can't) they have at best a 3-4 year window of opportunity but afterwards....It's gonna be REAL ugly.

Not as barren as you might think.

They have a pitcher that played in the futures game that throws a 95mph heater and people are comparing him to Lincecum with his delivery method. He was a 3rd round draft choice last year and is in high class A currently.

                Tyler Thronberg is the name.

Not letting me put a link in here.

When you're getting comparisons to Tim Lincecum before you've thrown your first pitch as a professional, it's a bit difficult to slip into your career quietly.

"Whenever you're compared to a two-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series winner, it's going to be pretty hard to live up to," conceded Tyler Thornburg.

Yet, some scouts made that comparison when the Milwaukee Brewers selected Thornburg in the third round of the 2010 draft out of Charleston Southern. Like San Francisco's Lincecum, Thornburg is a somewhat diminutive (5-foot-11, 185) right-handed pitcher with an unorthodox delivery and mid- to high-90s (mph) fastball.

I like the mentality though. Better to go for broke than be mediocre, especially when only 8 teams total make the playoffs.

I agree. Plus, I believe he had already stated earlier in the season that he'd be willing to move to a setup role if he were traded to a contender. Now, at the time, there were rumors of Yankee interest, so maybe it was more geared towards that, but I still think there's a pretty good precedent of closers doing setup work for contenders and "auditioning" for their next FA chance.

JJ is talking about before they traded for Greinke. I don't think it was top 5, but I think it was top 10.

And I don't think we have SP or 7th inning holes either. If Greinke would pitch to his potential, Greinke/Marcum/Yo/Wolf/Narveson is a pretty formidable rotation. Problem is Greinke hasn't done that yet. And as for the 7th, it'll be some combo of Hawkins and Saito, both of whom have been solid lately.

3B and SS, though, I agree. Especially short. God I hate Betancourt. With a fury.
Ugh I can't stand "T-Plush." He's been SURPRISINGLY decent this year, but his mental mishaps drive me insane.

I love Marcum and Gallardo in the rotation. It's Grienke that scares the crap out of me. I just don't think he's the ace everyone made him out to be when they made the trade.

I like to compare the Brewers top three starters with the top three from other playoff teams, and there's no way our's stands up to Atlanta's, Philly's, or SF's right now. Grienke needs to pull it together.

I am hoping Hawkins can fill the role in the 7th. He's been good since his return. Between he, Ax, and K-Rod...they may save the bullpen.

I'm interested how the K-Rod thing plays out. If he keeps the ego in check, it should be great. But I've already read a report that Boras has been trying to convince Melvin that K-Rod should close. It worries me.

Trade away our entire farm system? No thanks..
