Boston became the first team to miss the postseason after leading by as many as nine games for a playoff spot entering September, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Expert recap and game analysis of the Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves MLB game from September 28, 2011 on ESPN.

The Braves were 10 1/2 games ahead of St. Louis before play on Aug. 26. They were still up by 8 1/2 games on the morning of Sept. 6. Instead of popping champagne for a second straight trip to the playoffs, they became the first team in major league history to blow a lead of at least eight games for a playoff spot in September.

To add to this, just heard that this was the first time since 1953 that the Yankees blew a 7+ run lead in the 8th inning or later

An amazing game. Was watching most of the games tonight on MLB Network with my dad, we were rooting for the Rays honestly while watching Boston just get crushed with 2 outs in the 9th. I couldn't stop jumping around and screaming after they tied it, even more when the last hit came up.
Congrats Rays fans, you deserve the Wild Card
Why did I move here? I guess it was the weather.

Classic interview with Papelbon on MLB Network. He still looked shocked.

I don't really like the guy, but I give him credit for sticking around to talk to the media.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.
Of course, there are those who learn after the first few times. They grow out of sports. And there are others who were born with the wisdom to know that nothing lasts. These are the truly tough among us, the ones who can live without illusion, or without even the hope of illusion. I am not that grown-up or up-to-date. I am a simpler creature, tied to more primitive patterns and cycles. I need to think something lasts forever, and it might as well be that state of being that is a game; it might as well be that, in a green field, in the sun.
                                - Bart Giamatti, Green Fields of the Mind
