You don't think most owners (whom I assume you're referring to as the "MLB officials") already want a salary cap?

Until they have the stomach to risk a long strike/lockout of the players, it'll never happen, though. Look how long it's taken for the NHL owners, who are in much worse financial shape, to finally prepare to take this painful step.

You'd think every other sport in existence would see the success of the NFL and try to essentially copy it, but instead, it'll be eventual bloody labor-management wars.

This year's playoffs will have no bearing on this issue.

Good point. I know that most owners want a salary cap system, but will the rating affect how hard the head honchoes (not owners, but the decision makers of the MLB that don't own teams... well, besides Selig) will push this topic into the forefront in the next labor agreement (when does this current one run out again?)

"cough" 1994 "cough" and look MLB's finances were still screwy even after sacrificing the World Series. The CBA they signed this year was basically a stopgap until someone has the brains on the ownership side to stop taking the players' BS and shove an NFL-like cap down their throats. Otherwise we're still going to see this crap going on.

What percentage of owners must agree in order to pass a strict cap system? what about the players association?

1994 wasn't long. It was ill-timed, from the fan's point of view, but how many months of action were lost? Two? Is that enough missing paychecks to put pressure on the players to change their position? Obviously not.

And then, as you said, the owners blinked again last September.

The NHL, on the other hand, may be looking at an entire season lost, or more, next year.

I sure don't want an NFL style cap in baseball. An NBA type cap would be better IMO. There are virtually NO trades in the NFL, which sucks.

I do think some type of min/max spending needs to be setup. (good luck)

There I said it. Now get outta here

The gap between the best teams in the NFL are so slim due to their system. The gap between MLBs best and worst teams is very wide and the system they use makes it that way. People could argue a team (like the Yankees) that makes all that money should be able to spend as much as they like, however if it were that way few teams could compete and then whats the point? The money sharing system MLB uses isnt bad but is far from the best. I hope the NHL learns from the tight cap system the NFL has and the free spending of MLB and finds a nice medium. Otherwise only citys with 10 million + populations will survive and we can watch Toronto, NY, Chicago, LA, Colorado and Detroit go at it every year. I personally would stop watching
