Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Papelbon to me is showing signs of slowing down. Closers are a funny breed, they can turn to crap VERY quickly. I think he'll have a fairly good decent first year but after that would be gravy.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Anyone think the Brewers would turn to Rollins if Reyes is indeed in Miami? Or is Rollins gonna stay in Philly?
Rollins would be A LOT cheaper anyway...Milwaukee Brewers | Green Bay Packers | North Carolina Tar Heels | Wisconsin BadgersComment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Slowing down? Outside of his insane 2007, Papelbon has been the same pitcher every year (actually a little better last year). You only feel this way, imo, because he pitched for Boston and every blown save was made a big deal."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I don't think the Phillies have enough money to re-sign Rollins now with that Papelbon deal.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Papelbon is on a higher level than Madson, has more closing experience, and if Madson signs elsewhere, the Phillies will actually move up higher in the draft (Boston gets 30th pick, say Washington signs him they'll take their pick, which is higher up).
So it's a good deal.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
I'm happy to see this move, no real reason, I just thought it would be cool to see Papelbon in Philly. Just a random thing I guess.
And I love this time of year, looking forward to all the crazy rumors and see what comes of them (mostly nothing). I still love to follow them all regardless.

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
A Blue Jays item
- Jays are among 6 teams that looked at Jonathon Broxton working out in an effort to land a deal with a club. His agent says gone are the days of 99-100 MPH but he should be in the 93-97 MPH range. Broxton is said to be open to a one year incentive laden contract with the possibility of a vesting option in 2013. This sounds like a typical type of Jays move if they do have legit interest as this would be low risk high reward.
and an MLB item
- Twins are close to signing Jamey Carroll this is hot off the presses from Jerry Crasnick 15 minutes ago.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
It will be interesting to see where the Sox go from here at Closer with Papelbon gone.
It has been said that they are considering moving Daniel Bard into the starting rotation which would leave Bobby Jenks (yikes) as the likely in-house candidate.
I could see them maybe going after Madson, especially now that there is no chance he goes back to Philly. Joe Nathan is another i could see them talking to.
Heath Bell probably stays in the west with either the Padres or the Angels. I don't want to see them go after K-Rod. Brad Lidge would probably get lit up in the AL (worse than he already does in the NL). Broxton is probably done since he now has to "pitch" instead of just "throw".
Too bad to see Papelbon go but i think most people expected it. He has said in the past he wanted to set the record for money for a Closer and it looks like he has done it. Good luck in Philly Pap.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Didn't Wayne Huizenga pull this stunt, won a World Series, lost his butt that season, and was forced to do a fire sale the following year? I know the new stadium should bring better revenues but is Loria going to have that much money to get Reyes, Buehrle, Cespedes, and possibly Pujols?Last edited by SlimKibbles; 11-11-2011, 08:40 PM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Man, I love this time of year!! As an Angel fan, I hope we get a solid 3B. We haven't had a legit guy out there since Glaus and I am tired of seeing a lack of production from that spot. There was brief speculation that Trumbo would move there if they got either Fielder or Pujols, but that wouldn't work. I still think a healthy Morales can shell out 20-25 bombs and knock in 85-100.
I know this is also a long shot, but I would like C.J. Wilson as we have 3 legit righties as our 1,2, and 3. Throw in C.J. after Weaver and Haren and we have a world champion rotation. I can't wait to see what Dipoto has in store.Angels= 2025 World Series Champions!!Comment
