      First thing I thought as well...however, given what they gave up and the fact the don't have a full time 1b right now, I like it. He could play 1b until Rizzo/Alonso establish themselves if he doesn't work out in the outfield and they gave up two nobody prospects for him. he certainly won't put up the numbers he did in Celluar Field, but he is the best bat in their lineup immediately.

        It's tough to give up a nice pacakge of prospects from an already weak system, but I would take the risk on Garza.

        The Tigers needed another arm. Verlander and Fister won't repeat their 2011 performances. Scherzer and Porcello are unpredictable and inconsistent. Garza is a sure thing. 200 inning guy, never had an ERA over 4. Only 27.

        Their rotation was just ranked 7th in baseball. Adding Garza to the mix, with Scherzer 4th and Porcello 5th, would probably put them right behind the Phillies assuming Scherzer can stay consistent. It's too tempting to pass up.
        I don't think it's close. But I'd say Tigers are the favorites because of Turner.

        Marlins also seem interested according to Ken Rosenthal.

            Can he play 1B? Doesn't look like he's ever done it before.

            Too bad they couldn't have acquired him in the 2010 season. MAy have made the difference.

              They stuck Angel Guzman and Brad Hawpe there last year...he couldn't be any worse!

                  Defense no longer matters for the Padres, if it did, they'd stop trying to turn infielders into outfielders and vice-versa. By the way, it's Jesus Guzman, not Angel Guzman. I don't think there's a worst defender out there in baseball than this guy.

                  Quentin will just be Ludwick 2.0 I think, Castro might be a good reliever, but he hasn't been able to develop his secondary pitches which is why he's regressed the past two years.

                    Verlander > Weaver

                    Garza < Haren

                    Fister = Wilson

                    Scherzer = Santana

                    Remember that I said IF guys like Scherzer pitch to their ability. Obviously Santana was much better than Scherzer last year, but if Scherzer pitches like he did in 2010 he and Santana are evenly matched.

                    Fister had a 2.83 ERA last year. He's not going to post a .83 WHIP like he did down the stretch but there is no reason why he can't keep that ERA around 3. If he does that, him and Wilson are pretty evenly matched.

                    Haren is lot better than Garza, Verlander is better than Weaver.

                    So IF these guys can pitch up to their ability, yes they can compete with the Angels. I dont know if Max Scherzer will put it together full a season. There's a chance he could, there's a good chance he won't. But if he goes out and throws 200 innings with a mid 3 ERA like he did in 2010, he's just as good as Santana in that 4th spot. Santana's '11 was identical to Scherzers '10.

                    I'm just being optimistic. Visualizing everybody playing to their full potential, that's what I do in the winter. It keeps my sane. I need some baseball.

                            You have to understand. Angels fans believe that the season and playoffs are a formality. We should all fold down and let them parade their trophy.

                            And Angels fans have the nerve to call Rangers fans arrogant...

                              Rangers fans aren't any better. They should just let the play on the field talk for them. As far as I'm concerned the only team that can talk **** is St Louis.
