Francoeur just had a better year in 2011 than Jones has ever had, actually.

20/20 with an over .800 OPS and 71 XBH.

He also had an average year in the field and Jones had an abysmal year in the field.

            But...

            1. Jones is younger and has much more upside.

            2. There's a good chance Francouer's 2011 was a gigantic aberration.

And there's no way AJ had an abysmal year in the field unless you buy into all of those ridiculous/inaccurate fielding ratings. He's a gold glove OF.

              All this talk of 'upside'

Also, you mean those ridiculous ratings where each play is watched and evaluated on an individual level? It ain't perfect but it ain't ridiculous/inaccurate...

Jones is better now and has the upside to be a Torii Hunter like player.

And color me old fashioned, but I'd rather rely on what I see than UZR to decide whether a guy is a good fielder or not.

                  JJ,

Understand what your saying about Jones' glove. I actually thought he was a pretty good glove just from all the highlights I have seen. With the Braves talking about acquiring him I went out and did some reading...here is what I found (mind you, this comes from scouts, not analysts or UZR guys):

                  - They all say that early in his career he played WAY too shallow. This allowed him to get to a lot of flares/loopers and take away singles, but he almost never got back to a ball at the wall.

                  - When Buck took over the team he had Jones reposition himself much deeper. What this has done is allow him to get back to the wall and use his athleticism to make the highlight plays you see, but he cannot come in on a flare/looper to save his life.

                  - Every scout to a man said that Jones doesn't have the range of a CF and should be moved to a corner spot soon.

Now, I don't think that means he's a horrible fielder...his metrics show a bad year last year, but fielding metrics usually should be viewed over a 3 year period. What I do think this shows, however, is that he does have limitations and they won't be getting better.

Grady Sizemore got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend last night, it exploded and now he's done for the rest of the year.

I love the Zambrano deal on the Marlins part as the Cubs are picking up most of the salary. I see a lot of George Bell in Zambrano as he's a guy that's hot under the collar and can easily be uncontrollable but given the right situation and the right manager can be motivated to do fantastic things. Unlike Bell Zambrano is entering this situation with an eroding skillset and serious doubts internally and eternally whether he can put up the kind of numbers he used to.

I think Ozzie Guillen is the right kind of guy to manage him and harness all that energy as both are guys who have an intense desire to win and it can come out in rather explosive ways. I wouldn't be surprised to see Big Z have a nice comeback season in 2012.

Doesn't hurt the Ozzie and the Big Z are friends, either.

That's a spot on assessment, not only that but as roadman mentioned they're friends. He is gonna love it in Miami.

He may love it too much. He could get even fatter, have too much to do outside of baseball, etc.

And how likely is he to repeat his '11 season? He just started off his career with two 100 RBI seasons and people thought he was the real. And could barely get his OPS over .700 the next 4 years and was traded 3 or 4 times.
