He's not that kind of guy, he's loves baseball. During the winter and during off days he would be spotted playing in softball leagues.

Outside distractions won't be an issue

So I read the Cubs are picking up 15 million of the 18 and getting Volstad. So they paid 3 million, and get a guy who's gonna post like 4.70 ERA and paid 15 million to get rid of the guy who had an ERA over 4 just 1 time in the past 10 years.

I know they just needed him gone, but still.

The Cubs are not competing this year. So whether Z posts a sub 3 era or not doesn't matter too much. Volstad possibly could have a future with the club. The Cubs were not going to re-sign Zambrano, but *if* Volstad gets it going, then it's a huge win for the Cubs. If he stumbles, then they can non-tender him next offseason. It's not like Zambrano was going to be back, so if Volstad does not work out, it's not a big deal.

Don't think I'm saying it's a slam dunk Volstad has a break out season, but it's always a possibility. Why not trade for someone who could have a future with your team, when the player you're giving up does not have one?

I guess it's not really the Volstad part, but them paying so much of his salary just makes me wonder if they could have found something better in return. Potentially giving a team a number 2 pitcher and paying all of his contract. Just thinking out loud.

Nah, probably not. I'd imagine that Miami was probably the only team that was willing to take a chance on him due to the history with him and Ozzie.

I'm happy with what we got. Actually I'm happy that we got anything in return and even more satisfied we got him off our team. Yes, I loved him at times, but in the past few years he had lost it. His career had ran it's course in Chicago. It was time for him to go.

At least the Pads still have an overrated pitching prospect they got for him (Casey Kelly)...not all is lost!

There's definitely a plan in the Cubs FO, and it's not one I'm accustomed to seeing. Doesn't mean I'm not able to give rebuilding a chance, though - I just wonder how patient the fanbase will be with a team that, right now, doesn't look like it has a hope of contending this year.
