Yanks fans will obviously miss the offensive potential of Jesus Montero. But don't forget, they've got Austin Romine waiting in the wings too. And a staff that had a 4+ ERA just got a young, cost-controlled superstar in the making. And a deadly pitcher in Kuroda. Their rotation needs could not have been addressed via free agency, and it takes talent to acquire talent.

Props to Cashman for sadly vaulting to the front of the line, in my estimation.

I don't think Montero was ever going to CATCH in the Bronx.
IMO, I don't think he has it as an MLB catcher. He's destined for DH and at a young age with no position, that's not good. He'll have to hit and keep hitting.....and who knows how that will pan out....

The Yankees certainly got the better CHANCE in this trade, and I'm a little surprised that Seattle moved Pineda.
Now....I can see the Yankees getting another "frontline" starter.....from right across town, if he gets healthy, pitches effectively and the crosstown rivals decide to eat some contract.
THAT would make the Yankees very, very scary IMO.

And the trade for Johan would look like?

Why would you trade arguably the best pitcher in MLB when you still have him under contract for a few years and he will only be 26 this year. We can always trade him next year if we don't think we will be competing soon.

In all honesty, how much closer do you think you'll get to the play offs with Felix? I know he's an icon in Seattle but if you aren't winning with him why not trade him and get some huge pieces back? I doubt he's going to resign when his contract's up anyway, you could get some serious prospects for him.

I agree. They could have gotten a great hitting prospect and basically cemented a great rotation for ears with Banuelos/Betances, Pineda, and all of their prospects. I fail to see the advantage of keeping Felix.

Because the M's have him for 3 more years and they have a lot of young talent. If you're the GM of the Mariners, you don't want to give it a shot with a core of Felix, Ackley, Smoak, and Montero? Plus they have Figgins and Ichiro's contracts coming off the books. If the young talent develops and they use the $25m wisely, they'll compete with Texas and the Anaheim Pujols with Felix under contract.

If you believe the scouts and health isn't a factor, they already have a great rotation cemented for years to come (Felix, Hultzen, Paxton, Walker).

Wait...did you just acknowledge someone other than Verlander is the best pitcher in baseball? Won't they make you turn in your Tiger's homer card for that?

The Indians front office continues to insist that they're in on Carlos Pena. I doubt it.

They might compete in that time or they might not, what if they have 3 more losing seasons and Felix signs elsewhere? I'd much rather take the huge package for him than keep him based on the chance you have a winning season.
