Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
This new FO has only been there 3 years. They took over a team with a barren wasteland of a farm system and a MLB team that had Jose Vidro, Yuni Betancourt, and Jose Lopez in the starting lineup. They had very little bargaining chips and lacked the money to rebuild through Free Agency. Its obvious they're building by replenishing their minor league system (look at the Brewers to see if Jack knows what he's doing here). Building through youth can take 5-7 years in baseball, so judging their competency by their win/loss record over the first 3 years is pointless.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

You can talk about farm system ratings and building through youth.. Lots of teams have said that.. Few actually succeed at it.Last edited by bkrich83; 01-18-2012, 09:56 PM.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
I think he is, he absolutely dominated NPB (albeit AAA-like competition). He has much better numbers than the other Japanese pitchers that have come over from Japan. Remember the name Masahiro Tanaka, in couple of years he could be the next big name Japanese pitcher to make the jump to MLB.Comment

[quote=Melanconfan;2043279796]Since Cashman is the whole reason for this discussion, isn't it possible he was confident Long would eventually help him figure out lefties and that was a motivating factor to make the trade?
>Possible yes, more likely no.
Aceves hasn't been given a chance to start regularly because he doesn't have the stuff to get through a major league line-up more than once. When he has been given a chance to start he he hasn't been that good putting up a 1.39 WHIP and 1.09 K/BB. The long man role he would have been in was adequately filled be Noesi.
>Boston plans to ramp him up to start this year.
Logan was fine last year. A bit inconsistent but that can be said of most LOOGYs. Coke not being a deal breaker is the whole point I was trying to make. He's not some great reliever worth hanging onto at all costs like Mo or Robertson. And I'm not sure what your point is about Detroit trying Coke as a starter since he was bad at it.
> thankfully he shaped up to end the season to be respectful, i mean i have to root for him as he's the only lefty in the pen, but the first half the year he was not dependable to be put out there, put it this way, the way he started 2011 was a stark contrast to how he was in 2010 for NY, wouldnt call him a bit inconsistent as there bad stretches were too long last yr.
It's easy to say that about Kennedy with hindsight, but he had worn out his welcome and probably wasn't going to get another real chance in NY. Keeping Jackson, who's issues are significantly worse than those of Granderson, on the premise that he's cheap only to add another albatross contract makes no sense to me.
>i think he would have got the chance for the same slots that ended up going to colon and garcia.Comment

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
I really wish people would stop playing the "he hasnt pitched against the MLB hitters card". Or Every Japanese pitcher prior has failed. It comes off very 1947ish.Last edited by lilbiggio; 01-18-2012, 10:41 PM.Comment

For the sake of Rangers fans, I hope he's actually thrown a pitch especially with the money he's getting paid. I mean who would pay that much for a guy who has never played baseball or even thrown a baseball.Mets/Giants/Knicks/Rangers/Manchester United/Notre Dame Football

Re: The Hot Stove League Thread
Just salary wise, Darvish for $10 million a year is a steal. He's the first guy to come over that is young, has incredible stats, has top-of-the-rotation stuff, and has no durability issues. He's nothing like Matsuzaka.Comment
