That's sad to here, thought he might have sorted it out by now.

The last thing I heard of Rick he had ran out of his options and is now a FA. Also on top of that he also had that surgery on his elbow. The DuCross Brothers: Sports Internet Talk Show

La Russa and the Cards really screwed up that kid in the playoffs that year. I remember seeing him throw the ball so wildly. I knew right then and there that he'd never be the same again.
A shame really because I thought he had good stuff and a great heater.

Wrong.
Absolutely, 100% Wrong.
His Dad screwed him up.
Rick has more baggage than an airport.
His family life is horrible. His father has served multiple prison sentences for drug trafficing and was in prison at the time of Rick's dismanteling. The pressure of everything compiled was finally too much for him to hide (which he'd done his whole life)
(Note: this next part is purely heresay. It's inside and personal information and should be taken for what it is.)
And I've heard from a friend of mine who works in the Cardinals orginaztion, hangs out with the players and knows a lot of the players on a personal level, that the drug problem (namely cocaine) is not just a problem of his father's.
Take it for what it's worth. But don't blame this time bonb on LaRussa, Duncan or anyone else in the orgainization. Rick's problems are his own and his family's.Comment

Re: Rick Ankiel
Hmm thanks for clarifying. That's indeed very tragic. I actually feel even more sorry for the guy now.
Hopefully he bounces back from all this but knowing these kind of situations it's pretty doubtful. Oh well my best wishes go out to him.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Rick Ankiel
Oh whatever. I don't buy that crap. All of a sudden everything he suffered in his whole life is going to bother him during the NLCS? Gimme a break. The guy may have had a hard life, but that has nothing to do with him throwing pitches away.
Anyway, from what I heard he was already being converted into an outfielder and is pretty much done with pitching. He has great power and could be another Mark McGwire. Could be."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
