I'd say about 90 percent of the time, the tossed ball from a player is always for a kid. 9.9 percent of the time it's for a cute girl and .1 percent of the time it's for a woman that is of older age who is still mildly attractive.

The only reason the .1 percent is in there is because the Reds bullpen must be bunch of crazy lusterers. They gave this certain woman at least three baseballs a game I went to.

For those that didn't see my post in the Pleasures of Life thread, I kept the ball and don't regret it. I wasn't a fan of either team and it was the only ball that has ever been anywhere near me, then and still now many years later. No kids around to pass it off to either, but it did occur to me to look.

As far as "those dudes" that yell at you to throw it back, I heard it pretty hard for the rest of that inning. The HR was early in the game, 4th I think, and the home team was losing for most of the game. I still heard sporadic pathetic moans for me to throw it back for the rest of the game as if it was my fault the home team was losing.

Then there's the ballboys that sometimes have ulterior motives.

Re: THROW IT BACK! THROW IT BACK!

I've only taken a ball away from one person and that was my brother.

During BP, Joey Votto hit a fly out to our area in the LF bleachers at Busch. Everybody saw it was going to drop, so nobody tried for it. Then out of know where, a ball jumps up from in front of the out field wall. Time slowed down, (like all baseballs do when they come at you) I saw the ball was going to clear the four rows of people and it was coming straight at my brother and I. More so over to my brother. He reached out with both hands because it was moving straight towards his face.

When the ball was 3/4 of the way to my brother, he was ready to catch it. He thought he had this ball in the bag. My mind flashed back to 2001, when I was standing in the RF bleachers at old Busch Stadium. J.D. Drew was taking BP and he also hit a ball out towards me. Out of all people in that stadium, the ball was traveling towards me. I was 9 at the time and my brother wasn't in my way to catch this one. He was down with my dad by the dugout talking to Tony. This J.D. Drew ball also bounced on the warning track. I thought it would hit the top of the wall and stay in the field, but no. I saw the ball peak over the yellow line, still coming towards me. I warped into slow motion and at the last second threw up my glove. I was too short at the time. If I was a year older, my arm would have been long enough to reach it, but instead it bounce over me to somebody else.

It would be another nine years before I had another opportunity to catch a BP ball. It was during my freshman year of college and this was the day. This was my opportunity to redeem myself. I reached out of instinct with my left hand, no glove to be had, right in front of my brothers out stretched hands. The ball hit my hand, I squeezed so hard it would have crushed diamonds. I had just snagged my first Major League Baseball at the expense of my brother. That was when my tradition of leaving started once I got my ball. I said, "We're done. Let's go," and we left the bleachers, towards the escalators towards our mother who was already at our seats in section 359.

It's okay though, don't fret for my brother. Less than a year later, he snagged an Albert Pujols BP home run. It came towards his left, towards a lady's face. She ducked way and he just snagged it like it was a game of catch. No big deal, just another day playing ball.

The only game used foul ball that I have was from when we were sitting in the lower bowl back in 2000. Pudge hit a ball and it bounced off the bald head of a guy sitting a few rows in front of us. I don't know if that's "taking one away," but that's why you bring a glove if you're that close to the field.

I think we're onto something. Derrick Gould of the Post-Dispatch has taken the idea of throwing balls back on the field to the rest of Cardinal Nation.

Near the bottom of the page. Closing Remark 10.

                              Here's to the lazy people.

And, while I'm writing as a father I'd like to piggyback on a talk we had in the press box last night and a statement I put up on Twitter. Can we stop throwing baseballs back on the field after catching a home run by an opposing player?
I get that you want to show what a real fan you are. I get that you want to show up that ballplayer circling the bases by showing how you don’t want his stinkin' trinket. That’s cool. You're awesome. But please, there's another way to get rid of that junk. Give it to someone who will think it's a treasure. Find the nearest kid and give it to him or her. Make that kid's night. Make a baseball fan that night.
Don’t throw it back. Hand it forward.
                              Thanks.

I thought it was funny that to throw it back after Adam Dunn's moonshot, the fans needed a cutoff man.
