For me it doesn't matter. I would never throw it back, and I think that pushing people to do so is equally stupid. It's a baseball game, part of the experience is catching balls hit into the stands, you shouldn't be pressured to get rid of a ball that was hit to you. But then again, I was never the greatest with peer pressure.
