Re: Barry Bonds or Ken Griffey Jr.?

The fact that Babe Ruth is the only position player in the history of the game with a higher WAR than Bonds is pretty much all you need to know.

But what the hell? There are only three men with a better career OPS than Bonds. Their names? Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. Those guys were pretty good.

In many instances, ranking players who were involved in the steroid era is very difficult because nobody knows what would have happened had steroids not existed.

This is not one of those times, as Bonds was the better player pre-steroids.

And if you count the PED years, it's not even close.

Is that even a question? Ken Griffey Jr. I don't think that there will ever be a good left handeed 5 tool player like the Kid.

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

Definitely not a guy way better in almost every aspect of the game named Barry Bonds...

The Kid. Bonds had more speed but Griffey was a better fielder and the whole PED thing has to factor in a bit.

Griffey was most certainly NOT a better fielder than Bonds, for the umpteenth time.

But Griffey has more gold gloves therefore he's obviously better defensively!

                    Note a couple of things:

                    a. Even if you throw out the first four [steroid-infused] data points on Bonds' linear plot in the first graph, his above-average years are still roughly equivalent to Griffey's best years. His average years blow Griffey's average years out of the water.

                    b. By Bonds' age 35 season, when he reportedly began using steroids according to Game of Shadows, he had a 20ish WAR advantage over Griffey despite entering the majors at an older age.

                    This thread needs to die.

My question is why did Bonds play left field? Why didn't he play center field?

That has zero correlation as to who was the better fielder and better player. The WAR post by Chip just one above you gives statistical evidence as to why Bonds was the better player.

I understand that guys don't like Bonds and love Griffey, but even so...its tough for me to comprehend how you can objectively look at Bonds' overall body of work compared to Griffey's and think he's worse than Griffey.

No. You misunderstood. I was just asking if there was a reason behind it. He seemed good enough to be CF at least with the Giants.

This is like asking why spaghetti isn't served as a breakfast item in restaurants if it tastes better than oatmeal.

It's just the role they play with their team, where they fit, what they know best, and how they will most excel.
