Minnesota absolutely DID NOT get the shaft in that trade. We trade a below average player who is now a spare part (Meintkiewicz) and get an elite LH pitching prospect? That's a great deal, and another reason why Terry Ryan is the best GM in baseball.
Meintkiewicz will not be missed. He's been replaced by a better player.

Well said. Doug was one one of my favorite Twins and I was sad to see him go but at the same time I knew it had to be done. Room had to be made for Morneau whose introduction in the lineup came the same time the Twins offense turned around. The Twins have a division to win here, they can't continue having a first baseman who gives you 10 HR and 65 RBI a year when you could have a guy who could potentially hit 35 HR and 100 RBI. Morneau is a decent fielder so you can't tell me that 25 HR and 35 RBI doesn't make up for what Morneau's glove lacks when compared to Dougie's.
Again, Mientkiewicz is one of my favorite players and part of me wishes they didn't get rid of him but he said he didn't want to be in the backup role so this is best for both sides.
