Jose Bautista was about 2 years away, but they let him go in the Rule 5 draft. Only protecting 37 players out of 40 was the stupidest GM move I've ever seen. And I won't even get into protecting jabronies like Mark "Passes out after smoking weed" Corey and Jason "Oil Can't" Boyd.

I agree...

And keeping Abraham Nunez was a mistake. When they signed Lofton, Sanders, and Simon last spring I actually thought that Littlefield knew what he was doing. All he had to do was make trades for quality prospects during the season. But no, all we get in return is Bobby Hill? The Bucs have a poor front office and it is sad to see them make bad moves year in year out.

You look at last season and how they started, and it did look like this team would not be so bad,
maybe even be competitive, but that was all gone by june,
i'm not sure who is the worse GM, Dave Littlefield or Cam Bonifay,
but neither one has done anything to help this team.

My vote goes to McClatchey. He's the guy who told DL to cut payroll by 20 MIL and pretty much handcuffed the guy. I'm not sure who to blame for the Rule 5 fiasco though.

Littlefield was the guy who built that Marlins team (except for a few of the final pieces like Pudge and Bell). He got all those good young arms that FL has. The guy is definately a good GM, but I think his hands are tied by Kmac right now and he can't make any moves that he'd like to do.

Last year payroll was at 50-some MIL and this year Kmac ordered it down to 30 MIL. That's a significant cut and ruined any chance that the Pirates would compete this next year.

You have to blame Littlefield, he does a Q&A session on the Pirates site at MLB.com and his thoughts were that he felt it was best to keeep the 40 man roster at 37 so we can sign FA. I originally liked him, but he needs to be gone...along with Mclatchey.

Personally, I hold McClatchy responsible more than Littlefield, although I wonder why the Expos can find money to sign guys like Carl Everett and now Tony Batista and the Bucs get Chris Stynes. I don't think Stynes is a bad player, but with a lineup virtually without power a guy like Batista would've helped. Although, he has a glove like Ramirez.

It looks like Littlefield is building this team with pitching and defense, which is definitely cheaper than a power lineup. Stynes is a good fielder (a Joe Randa type, really). With Stynes, Jack Wilson, Jason Bay, and Tike Redman they have the makings of a good defensive team. If you remember last year, the bullpen and defense killed this team. Wouldn't be surprised to see DL sign another slick fielder like Travis Lee to play first.

Let's face it: 2004 is gonna be a long year. Maybe someone will step forward and offer to buy the team from K Mac and infuse some money.

They may end up signing Robert Fick instead of Travis Lee, Fick has a pretty decent glove and has more power than Lee, don't be surprised if Daryl Ward competes for the starting RF job, the team has gotten nowhere in the search for another Outfielder.
