Re: Lopez inks deal with O\'s

This was a solid pickup for Baltimore. Lopez was great last year, but I'm not so certain you can count on him to do what he did last year again. But he should be very good, and still should put up solid numbers.

It's going to be exciting keeping up with my Yanks and the AL East. This division has great competition coming for this baseball season, as every team in the division is making a push to better themselves.

another quality signing by the O's, i like it......but, do they have any pitching? at all? they non-tendered 2/5 of their rotation....outside of R. Lopez, what do they have left???...i realize the AL East has some ferocious lineups in Boston, NY and Toronto, but all those teams also have very solid SP, im just wondering what it is that Baltimore has in this department

Out side of Rodrigo Lopez and Kurt Ainsworth the Orioles rotation is up for grabs, i think that they will try to re-sign Jason Johnson, and there has been talk about Sidney Ponson coming back, they have some good young arms down in the minors also, once they find the right mix i think they will be fine.

While it's a good signing right now the potential downside is that we've seen Javy's peak and he's going to decline rapidly now. Also I don't think he will be able to catch as much as he used to so I would expect him to DH some of the time.

BTW techinically Gibbons isn't an Orioles farmhand he was originally a Blue Jay. He was picked up in the Rule V a couple or so yrs ago.

Yeah, but he developed to the player he is today in the O's system... but you are right, we did get him with the Rule V pick from the Jays.

If I were a O's fan, I would be nervous. Lopez came out of nowhere this season, playing for that new contract. He had a lot of protection in the Braves lineup, and he is a year older.

I'm not too nervous. Javy is old (33), but i don't think he's done. He's played in 1156 games in his career and has hit 214 HR's, and driven in 694 runs while hitting .287. He averages close to 120-130 games / year. you can probably add another 10 games to that b/c he'll probably DH a few times with the O's. So if he plays 140 games, and based on career averages, we can expect something in the lines of

                              .270-.290 AVG
                              20-25 HR's
                              80-90 RBI

That's a HUGE upgrade over our previous catchers of Gil and Fordyce. Now, whether or not that's worth 3/23 is debatable, but I think it's worth it.
