Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
Oh lordy, someone put the calendar on 2007 with the Red Sox prediction.
Way way too early for this. I like to at least see spring first as one injury can just destroy a season for some teams. Not sold on the O's at all either. They had entirely too much luck last year to just barely make the playoffs. Going to have to be some changes for them not only to get the wild card, but to win a division title.
Obviously I am for Toronto, but again, I want to actually see some games before I hand them the playoff spot I want them to get.Comment

Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
If the Red Sox, Royals and Mariners all make the playoffs while the Yankees, Tigers, Angels and Rangers all miss the playoffs, I will eat a shoe. Seriously, will film myself doing this.Too Old To Game Club

Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
Red Sux are a last place team this year IMO. Marionettes would also be a last place joke of a team for the fourth year in a row if it weren't for the Astros moving to the AL this year too. Both of those teams are straight up trash.
Anyway...
AL East - Rays
AL Central - Tigers
AL West - Angels
AL Wild Card 1 - Rangers
AL Wild Card 2 - Yankees
NL East - Nationals
NL Central - Reds
NL West - Dodgers
NL Wild Card 1 - Giants
NL Wild Card 2 - PhilliesComment

Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
The Red Sux and Marionettes are still both bottom feeders, for sure and I can't even think of a single argument for either one of those inferior teams to have a chance at their respective divisions. I can see KC at least making some noise in a weak *** division though, although the Central is still Detroit's to lose as far as I'm concerned.

But all three of those teams making the playoffs while all the talented teams miss would be the most incredible season in sports history.Too Old To Game Club

Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
AL East- Blue Jays or Rays
I just don't see the Orioles having the same success as they did last season unless Bundy makes a huge splash and they get even better production than last season. The Red Sox and Yankees are at least 2-3 years away from getting back into it so that leaves the Jays and Rays who have pretty much reached their pinnacles. A lot of things have to go right for the Jays to win the division and something tells me that the Rays will be on their heels. However, the Rays really need Wil Myers to step up, Longo needs to be healthy and their young pitchers really need to step up... So really it's a toss up.
AL Central- Royals
This is the worst division and if you win 88-90 games then your a shoe in. I think that if Hosmer bounces back, Moose plays to his potential, Frenchy is serviceable and Cain doesn't get hurt while the others play at the same level or better than last year, they should be just fine. There's a lot that needs to go right but if it does, then the Royals should be just fine. The Tigers are in the same boat, they're banking on that Rendon kid being a great closer and with no fallback option, they could be in trouble early, they lack a solid shortstop, Alex Avila needs to be consistent and they need the bottom half of their rotation to put some good innings together. Really, it's just up in the air, but they are the only legit threats to contend the others suck or are mediocre at best.
AL West- Angels
I think that they have another great year now that the rotation is shored up a little more. I think Oakland played well but they need to do that all year to win it all and I just don't see that, Seattle and Huston are not even threats to crack the top 3 and Texas needs an impact bat to even come close to contending with the Angels.
NL East- Nationals
Really it's a two and a half legged race, the Nationals and Braves will be slugging it out, assuming everything clicks for the Braves.. then you have the Phillies who are a threat if they're healthy but they just aren't the team they were in 2011. Then you have the Mets and Marlins who aren't even close to being threats. Washington has the most complete team in baseball and it will definitely carry them to the top.
NL Central- Pirates/ Cincinnati
I'm going to skip over the Cardinals because I don't think they're going to be able to repeat last years success consistently and I'm going to throw my lot in with the Pirates. Like the Royals, a lot has to go right but the Pirates are nonetheless a legit threat. However, I feel that they need to get impacts from Gerrit Cole and/or Jameson Taillon to be able to win the division. They also need to avoid an epic collapse. The safer bet may be the Reds assuming Aroldis Chapman is money and everything clicks like it should. The Reds are a dangerous opponent and will definitely give the Pirates a run for their money.
NL West- Dodgers
I just don't see anyone else giving the Dodgers a run for their money. If someone gets close, the Dodgers will spend more and push the other teams away. San Fran has a nice team but I think Lincecum needs to bounce back and Marco Scutaro needs to perform, in other words, there's just too much risk involved with picking the Giants. The Dodgers have a good team and if the play close to expectations they should be fine.
W.S. Champs- Nationals/ Dodgers
I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

I almost put the Jays in here, but I'm just not sold on the Jays as much as others are. Dickey moving from the NL East to the AL East should affect him more than some seem to think. Not to mention Josh Johnson's K rates and fastball velocity dropped last season which should be a concern for a guy who was always a power pitcher, plus his injury history makes me worry about him staying healthy. Reyes + turf? That seems like a knee problem waiting to happen. I just reserve my judgement on them until they play meaningful games and prove me wrong.Check out my Houston Astros Dynasties:

Re: Very Early 2013 Playoff Predictions
The Tigers have contingency plans in place if Rondon fails, whether it is closer by committee, signing Brian Wilson from free agency or making a trade. Peralta had a WAR of 2.5 last year and 5.2 the year before; if he's somewhere in the middle of that I think Tigers fans will be happy. Avila was pretty much the same thing, 4.9 in 2011 and 2.6 in 2012. The rotation is a sexy beast; one would be hard pressed to find a rotation better than the Tigers' in the AL. At the end of the day however, they still have to stay healthy and if they had lots of injuries, anything could happen.
Detroit's strength of schedule was 21st overall (and 2nd to last in the AL). Their rotation isn't that great if you consider all things equally. There's a reason Detroit finished with the 7th best record in the AL and a road record under .500 (the 6 teams ahead of them all had winning records). They're just not THAT good outside of their division, including their rotation.Comment
