    Re: Concern for yankee fans

Mussina's not a bad pitcher, but he's not the ace the Yankees want him to be.

Millar's a career .290 hitter, he hit .276 last year. The two years prior to that he hit .314 and .306. His OPS in both of those years was .931 and .875 where as last year it was .820. He did set a career high of 25 home runs in 544 AB's and before it was 20 in 449. It's very reasonable to assume he'll have numbers just as good if not better and its completely false to say it was a career year because his 2001 season was more of a career year.

And while we're at it, David Ortiz's numbers the last 3 years:
    AB's AVG HR OPS
    303 .234 18 .799
    412 .272 20 .839
    448 .288 31 .961

Looks like a logical progression. Fenway has been pretty friendly to him (.315, 17 HR) so I expect similar numbers this year.

oh good backing up there. By the way mussina is an ace if he got the run support pettite did he would have probably won 25 games.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

I think the big knock on Mussina is that he has never had a 20 win season, which is why people do not necessarily look at him as being an ace, he has been a very good, very consistant pitcher in his career, twice he has won 19 games in a season but could not pull out number 20, 3 more times he won 18 games in a season, he is coming off his ninth consecutive 200+ Innings season, and has thrown at least 200 innings in 10 of his 13 major league seasons, he may be the ace of the Yankees now, but only because they lost there two best pitchers.

I think Mussina is better than Pettitte, and always has been. Isn't as good of a big game pitcher, but he is better overall imo. And at this point in their career's, I'd put him over Clemens too.

Is there a concern for Yankee fans? Yes. However, it is really about health. If the rotation can stay reasonably healthy they will be ok. Mussina is a good solid pitcher who has performed well in the big games (Oakland 1-0, Bos-relief effort to name two). I would venture to say that he has just as many, if not more, big game performances compared to Pedro. Don't get me wrong, Pedro is great and will probably be a Yankee next year, but he doesn't scare me like Schilling does in a big game. Basically if Brown and Vasquez have their typical years (and stay healthy) and Lieber and Contreras can be good, the Yanks and RedSox should both win over 95 games. I still think it comes down to depth of pitching. Wakefield doesn't scare me as all knuckleballers are spotty. Game 4 matchup--Wakefield vs. a healthy Lieber or possibly Vasquez. Which would you prefer?
