Yeah, he had three straight improving seasons and was becoming a premiere player until 2002, the beginning of his injury woes.

He's no Bonds/Sosa/Giambi/Pujols at the plate, but you put him in between two lefties and he'll feast on left-handers if the opposing manager brings them in for the lefties.

I don't think any team would wanna waste cash on him with that contract. If he'd cut in half I'm sure he'd find some other teams interested in him, but that won't happen so the Reds will probably just be stuck with him.

                  Re: can anyone afford griffey?

The Mariners would certainly benefit from getting Junior back. He'd be a perfect fit in the #4 spot in the lineup between Boone and Edgar Martinez, and you better believe M's fans would welcome him back with open arms!

Another thing on his salary - about $5 million per year is deferred, way out until 2025(!), so getting him now is like taking on an extra $8.5 million or so per year for the rest of the deal. Plus, if/when the Reds move him, you know they will take salary back in a trade or be forced to send cash with Griffey. If the Rangers ate what, $40 million on the A-Rod deal, you know the Reds will have to eat cash as well.

The thing to remember is the Reds want out of this contract, period, and look for something to happen soon. If the Reds don't move Junior this season, then they are stuck with him once the 10-and-5 rule kicks in and he can veto any trade. He has no trade clause now, but will after the 2004 season is in the books. There are substantial rumors out there, both from Seattle and Cincinnati papers (Seattle Times and Dayton Daily news to be exact) by the way, but nothing new in the last week. What's strange is that with rumors and speculation about Griffey, there hasn't been any denials at all coming from Seattle. Howard Lincoln even said "Junior is a great player and a great human being" when asked directly about it, and the M's are usually quick to shoot down rumors. Griffey back to Seattle has been floated the last couple of years, but this time, it feels like there is more to it than just pure speculation.

While we know this topic is all speculation, if, IF, Griffey comes back and has a monster season and starts to look like the Griffey of old, then, i think next year we will be having this topic for real.
right now i'm not sure that even if the Reds wanted to move Griffey, they would be able to, this is going to be a telling season for Junior.
as for Griffey to the Sox, Griffey is(was?) a great player, but if Theo Epstien were to make this deal he might get run out of town.
