    Re: MLB Off-Topic

So is Manfred about to have a press conference?

In the Tuesday interview arranged by Ohtani's spokesman, Mizuhara, 39, told ESPN that he asked Ohtani last year to pay off his gambling debt, which multiple sources said had ballooned to at least $4.5 million. Mizuhara said that he previously had placed bets via DraftKings and assumed bets placed through Bowyer were legal.

"Obviously, he [Ohtani] wasn't happy about it and said he would help me out to make sure I never do this again," Mizuhara said. "He decided to pay it off for me."

"I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting. I want people to know I did not know this was illegal. I learned my lesson the hard way. I will never do sports betting ever again."

But on Wednesday afternoon, Mizuhara told ESPN that Ohtani had no knowledge of his gambling debts and that Ohtani had not transferred money to the bookmaker's associate.

Who says that the Pete Rose ban doesn't work?

""I never bet on baseball," Mizuhara said. "That's 100%. I knew that rule ... We have a meeting about that in spring training.""

        Also:

"Mizuhara had a contract with the Los Angeles Angels when Ohtani played there and signed with the Dodgers this off-season. Mizuhara confirmed to ESPN he has been paid between $300,000 and $500,000 annually".

Remember when people said the Reds had too many infielders?

          Marte…suspended.
McLain…shoulder injury, who knows how long he will be out.
India…has been dealing with plantar fasciitis since last season.
Top prospect Arroyo…torn labrum, done for the year.

Well if it was Ohtani gambling, MLB would for sure cover it up and blame it on someone else. Otherwise they'd be losing their top star AND their partnership with gambling companies would be a problem. Or they would go the "he didn't bet against his own team, so it's whatever" route. This is all hypothetical obviously.

Oh, I'm not naive enough to disregard the possibility that Ohtani gambles / may have a gambling problem, more just commenting on the fact that the internet is working 24/7 and rarely misses

I'm certainly having fun with it too:

At the very least, if true, and looking at it in the best possible light, Ohtani showed poor judgement in, not only covering the interpreter betting losses, but in getting himself directly involved by making a wire transfer...yikes.

This story is gonna end up like the MJ retirement/gambling suspension conspiracy. I don't know what's true or not, but the thought of the interpreter being the fall guy will never go away.

Because it doesnt make sense to go from "Ohtani helped the interpreter by paying off his debt" to "the interpreter stole his money". He's supposed to be the face of MLB. It's an incredibly bad look if the face of MLB got caught gambling, especially when the bookie is under federal investigation AND you can't bet on sports yet in California.

Oh, it just so happens he NEVER had this issue with the interpreter when he was on the Angels. It's not a conspiracy mill if it may have some legitmacy to it.

Random thing; I was looking at the 2010 draft and of course we all know Harper was the top pick that year and I think most of us would agree that he's on a HOF trajectory.

The thing I didn't realize is that he isn't the top player in terms of WAR from that draft...in fact, he's not even 2nd. Manny Machado is the top player from the 2010 draft in terms of WAR (he's quietly putting together a great career). The #2 player from that draft is the pitcher who struck him out to end the 2018 WS...Chris Sale.

Anyway...I found it surprising as I would have thought Harper was the clear leader from that draft, but it shows how both Machado/Sale have had really solid careers despite probably not being lumped into the same tier as Harper.
