    Re: MLB Off-Topic

What evidence we have so far:

The idea that the pitch clock could be contributing by making pitchers dial up to maximum intensity with less time to recover between pitches has intuitive appeal, but injury rates had already risen before the clock’s introduction last year. As Baseball Prospectus’ Derek Rhoads and Rob Mains noted, the total of 233 pitchers who landed on the injured list last year was about the same as in 2022 (226) and ’21 (243), up from ’19 (192). Likewise for the number of Tommy Johns as measured by year, starting with the day that pitchers and catchers report (as opposed to a calendar year): 28 for last season, compared to 26 for 2022, 31 for ’21, 27 for ’20, and 16 for ’19. In a study published last June, my colleague Dan Szymborski found no meaningful relationship in injury rates with regards to the pitchers whose pace increased the most from 2022 to ’23, at least to that point. The Hopkins study that MLB cited has yet to be published, though it’s hard to believe that the league hasn’t shared its preliminary findings with the union. Notably, Clark did not point to any study that produced a result that reflected his constituency’s concerns. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/more-ucl...s-thorny-mess/

I think one of the big factors that gets ignored is spin rate. Velocity clearly causes issues, but once teams started measuring spin rate pitchers began gripping the ball harder to generate that spin. Generating the spin rate and the velocity is likely a terrible combination for pitcher’s arms.

I still remember his debut. The entire city was excited. We had years and years of 100 loss seasons but he was hope. Shame that injuries ruined his career.

His debut is one of the few that lived up to the hype. I know it was against a poor Pirates lineup, but it was such a hyped event and he struck out 14 while looking nearly unhittable. I remember thinking he was got going to win multiple CY awards…at least he has 2019.

We all have seen random tshirt guys selling outside of venues before or after a game, but imagine if that guy was your (player on the team's) dad.

David Schneiders dad will be selling these outside the gate after the game.

I faced him once when we were both 18 years old, and for the life of me I couldn't believe that was already 17 years ago when it just feels like six years ago. It was weird when I heard he had retired because I thought he was like 28, but then I realized we were the same age and said "Oh, gotcha."

Overhand throwing is just bad for your body. There's no fix for it. Guys are going to continue trying to get better and better at it, but until we evolve to have thicker ligaments, this is going to be the outcome of the chase to throw 90, then 95, then 100, then 105

Flew out to RF. He never gave me a slider, thank goodness. He wasn't throwing many sliders to lefty hitters at the time though.

The Mariners were in the drivers seat for the #1 pick in 2009... swept their final series, so it went to the Nats instead.

Could have had 5 years with Strasburg and prime Felix...

... Dustin Ackley was the consolation prize.

Another glorious chapter in Mariners history.

Shohei Ohtani’s ex-interpreter charged with stealing $16M from baseball star in sports betting case

Estrada said that there is no evidence that Ohtani was aware of his interpreter’s actions, adding that Ohtani has cooperated with investigators.

“I want to emphasize this point: Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case,” he said.

The criminal complaint — detailing the scheme through text messages, financial records and recordings of phone calls — showed even Mizuhara knew the game was over. In a message to his illegal bookmaker on March 20, the day the Los Angeles Times and ESPN broke the news of the investigation, he wrote: “Technically I did steal from him. it’s all over for me.”

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Federal investigators say Mizuhara made around 19,000 wagers between December 2021 and January 2024 — nearly 25 bets per day on average. The wagers ranged from roughly $10 to $160,000 per bet, averaging around $12,800. Estrada said investigators did not find any evidence Mizuhara had wagered on baseball.

While Mizuhara’s winning bets totaled over $142 million, which he deposited in his own bank account and not Ohtani’s, his losing bets were around $183 million — a net loss of nearly $41 million.

That contract structure felt shady from the start. Wonder if the league even investigates that at all or not.
