Reminds me of this post I made a few years back:

I think this list goes on in weird ways like this, and some of the father/son ones actually do make some sense, but I was wondering if they ever signed somebody because, on top of their talent, they could put a PR spin on their names and make it a win-win for them.
Hell, even Joey Bart for the Giants would make sense since we have the BART Train in the Bay Area. The marketing behind that literally takes care of itself.

MLB introducing "rivalry week" which just means all games will feature teams facing off against a closely located team.

              Mets vs Yankees
              Phillies vs Pirates
              Os vs Nats
              Rays vs Marlins
              White Sox vs Cubs
              Cards vs Royals
              Guardians vs Reds
              Twins vs Brewers
              Angels vs Dodgers
              Astros vs Rangers
              Rockies vs DBacks
              As vs Giants
              Mariners vs Padres
              Braves vs Red Sox
              Jays vs Tigers

Most do make sense, obviously Red Sox vs Braves and Mariners vs Padres aren't the two ideal matchups but that's the best you can do to make all others make sense.

For some reason I didn't realize until just now that they will play 3 full seasons in Sacramento. I was thinking it would be just 1 season, but the Vegas stadium obviously still needs to be built. And the stadium in Sacramento will have artificial turf, because that is somehow better in the heat.

Random question - does anyone recall when pitch count became a part of the broadcast display?

I can’t remember it not being there, but in watching some games from the late 2000’s/early 2010s it isn’t there and it isn’t mentioned. Made me wonder when it started being displayed…

I'd say around the mid 10s maybe?

Looking at league averages, from 14-15 is when things jumped a lot in terms of pitchers used per season per team. A jump of 2.2 pitchers just between those 2 seasons. A jump not seen as drastically between 2 seasons since the mid 50s (* if I checked correctly).

That's when people really started looking at pitch counts and all that. I remember when the Royals won all the media people were saying how teams would copy the Royals (to be fair, they say that about every championship team) with their bullpen usage, and clearly it happened since the Royals rise happened the same time as the bullpen usage change.

Despite that I wouldn't notice or care as much if it suddenly disappeared. However, I can't believe it took until the late 90s? or so until scorebugs became a permanent thing in games in all sports and not just a quick flash on the screen during breaks in play.

Back then people had attention spans and didn't need constant reminding what down it was, or what inning or even how much time was on the clock. Nowadays ,we need scorebugs and could never survive those prehistoric days. Lol.

Is it really attention spans or just people being more invested and data driven than before?

Or is it also because people are more likely to tune in/out at any given moment so they kind of have to know what's going on at any given moment instead of waiting 50 seconds for the next time the scorebug shows up.

combination maybe? attention spans are affected by multitasking, attention spans in general don't have the opportunity to be spent on a single thing, but that's a different tangent and I've already lost track of the original point
